Steering rack, overhaul.

I have got some new steering gaiters because mine have holes in 
them.  Is it a good idea to take the whole of the steering rack
out, and overhaul it, or to just replace the gaiters.  Any comments
or suggestions much appreciated.

PS.   I now have my dash back in, because the first coat of varnish
is refusing to dry enough to sand.  So I'll get is out later and
sand it, and apply about 10 coats.
