That's the way I do it with my TR-3B, since I don't own a timing light.
This tip is in the Moss Catalog, and seems to do a pretty good job. The
question that I've been wondering is -- is this good enough or should I
invest in a timing light? Will I see an improvement in performance if I
do?

Another method I've heard of and used is to advance the timing to where
the car idles at the highest rpm, then retard it until it idles at 100rpm
lower than that.
