Hi Steve:

I've always believed that you DO NOT want the releasae bearing in constant
contact.  It should release fully away from the housing.  Also, haven't
disassembled mine yet, but all of the manuals do show a spring in the slave
cylinder.  In fact, VB and others even sell the spring individually for
replacement.
