carl;
boy oh boy , where to begin? it can take me up to 2.5 hrs shop time to set
up a pair of carbs, so the list is long. but , the obvious stuff first. on
the volvo i have to assume everything is stock and you running KD or ZH
needels that are new, that you know how to centrilize the jet and know how
to set mixtures and ballance the carbs. if not, buy the haynes zs and su
books at a used book store and learn. i'm going to address things that the
book doesn't teach you. first, .010 is usally not a survivable amount of
wear. 005 is more reality and i set new shafts up at .0005 to .001. at high
mileage, both carbs will wear their sliding joint in the suction chamber.
factory is .0005 , unusable is only .002 . sympthoms are not being able to
get a consistant idle mixture, and dashpot oil usage. if you got this , the
carbs are now parts doaners. don't bother going further untill you get that
fixed. worn shafts let unmetered air in . if you allready have the mixture
set on the rich side, the combination of the high idle (from the shaft leak
and the throttle butterfly cocking to the side) will usally guarantee
run-on. BTW the wber conversion works great but contact me for jeting.it
will also ice like a son of a ------ in the winter if you don't have a warm
air supply. i've seen 3/4 " ice on the side of the manifold... listers ,
sorry for the volvo talk but it all applies to our tr's too. neither car
blows intake man gskt. often, but check for leaks on the outside of the
gskt on #1 and 4 on the volvo . set the mixture lean and spray carb
cleaner on the gskt or other suspected place . if ithe eng speeds up... you
found a leak. if your eng bursts into flames , burns it and the garage to
the ground, you found an exhaust leak. please have the courtesy to die
fighting theflames so you can't sue me ay?inside the carbs , the butterflys
wear on the sides from side thrust on the shafts. remove the butterflys, if
ther is a step more that a couple thou, get new ones. i cant stress enough
that the needles have NO wear. it will show in the 1,2,3 position on the
taper. even .001 will affect your mixture progession. very light scratches
are ok a shiney spot 1/4 of the width of the needle is not even close
unless you have spring biased needles. jets are supposed to be NLA for
fixed jet zs and not replaceable anyway, but thats not true on either case.
Joe Curto (look in hemmings) seems to be the US su and zs carb parts god.
this rant assumes you've got a godd eng , ign, and support systems. what i
tell people is this, if your having trouble and can't figure it out with
your resourses, go to "THE MAN" and pay him to go over your car once, watch
while he does and ask him to teach you basic mixture tuning." THE MAN"
spent hundreds of hours learning what works and why, and he can be worth a
lot more to you than what your gonna pay him. don't pick his brain first
without doing YOUR homework , or he'll feel used and not talk to you .
information is money...and he has the same house payments and kids that you
do. BTW , "THE MAN' is the guy who never advertises, is booked for a month
with 15 to 35 people on his waiting list and has no life if he lets clients
ask too many questions for too long. don't show up after noon, as panic has
allready set in and if you see him working on sat. on clients cars , walk
on by. he would rather be playing with HIS lotus or ducati and ain't gonna
be in a good mood . sunday---don't even. bribes help after you get to know
him/her ; cookies and starbucks coffie are best for a saturday approach.
i've yammered too much, but this is fun
