My 1972 TR-6 had that same arrangement when I got the car. The speaker
was hanging in the passenger comparment screwed into the horizontal sheet
metal in front of the firewall. (Looked like it had been there for
twenty years) I always thought it was an aftermarket thing done by the
PO.
