The problem described, assuming it is an early Tr6, is most likely
related to the breakage of the 'top-hat" portion of the 2nd gear bronze
bushing. If this has been broken for some time, there is a high
probabaility that the 3rd gear mainshaft circlip will also be badly
worn, caused by the gear train moving back and forth.

The syncro hubs on bronze bushed cars are not as good as the
later spec. Having said that, they should function perfectly OK
if the dog teeth on them are not worn badly.

Repair can be undertaken by a competent amatuer, but ideally it
is left to professionsls. Whomever you go to, if they can't
show you a selection of home made or professional tools for
dismantling this specific box, try elsewhere, as it says they either are
too rough, or haven't done them before.

The 3rd gear circlip I referred to is particularly difficult to remove.
You will need a selection of shim washers to get the mainshaft gear
endfloat acceptable.

I cant comment on repair prices in the US. if it is non-O/D, & the box
is on the bench, then a thorough strip & repair, providing no disasters,
will take about 6 hours. A real "quickie" job would be 2-3 hours, both
proving you have the tools.
