I tried the many suggestions regarding the adjustment of my rear brakes
and, as is usually the case, found a new problem.

As you may recall, I had little or no tension on my parking brake.
This, I found out was because the cable retaining block that holds the
parking brake cable in place near the wheel (so that it has leverage)
had detached itself. When I pulled on the parking brake handle, I was
pulling the whole cable assembly, not just the cable. With that fixed,
I now have a parking brake again (with no adjustment to the shoes).
Interestingly, the threaded part of the block was covered with
undercoating which leads me to believe that the parking brake never
worked right

My brake pedal has virtually no resistance. Repeated pumping results in
only slight resistance. Repeated pumping results in a "slushy" sound
from the pedal area and the pedal always goes all the way to the floor.
Backing in and out of the garage, I have enough braking action to stop
the car (from a crawl) when the pedal is pushed all the way to the
floor.

Wednesday it probably will get a new master cylinder.

Thanks for the ideas.
