Phil,
In the extreme I suppose, lugging an engine could be defined as attempting to
gain more power from the engine while holding it in too high a gear (ratio)
precipitating pre ignition/pinging.
But, you can also lug an engine without pinging by not upshifting at a point
which should occur to match the load you're placing on the engine with the
capability of the engine and trans to meet that load.
So...how do you know when you are in the "lug zone".......sound and feel!
Next time you're out-n-about try accelerating from around 1200 rpm in 4th
gear going up grade.....not for long! That sort of groaning and rumble and
vibration that you hear from your drivetrain will go away when you downshift
into 3rd.....shifting into 3rd took you out of the "lug zone". Now it's as
clear as mud, right:) Ya just gotta feel it!
