Hi Michael. I don't know whether this will help you or not, but I ran into
the same problem this weekend installing a spin on oil filter adapter in my
73 TR6.

When I removed the oil filter canister, I noticed that I was missing the
O-ring. The spin oil filter adapter came with one (actually two - an outer
and inner) so I didn't worry about it. After installing the adapter with the
O-rings, oil was gushing out.

Since the original oil filter canister did not leak without the outer
O-ring, I decided to install the adapter without the O-ring (outer) but I
also used Loctite's Form-A Gasket as added insurance. This setup worked like
a charm - no leak!

I think someone else recommended installing the adapter without the outer
o-ring in the archives, but I could not find the posting again last time I
searched.

Hope this helps.
