Also, how do your remove the needles from the piston?  The manual said to turn
the setting screw counterclockwise (I think) about two turns then remove the
needle.

It will probably take more than two counterclockwise turns to "release" the
needle.  Especially if it were turned all the way clockwise to begin with which
yours may have been.  A needle turned fully clockwise (rich setting) would give
the "solid" feel you described.
