Bob,
I found myself in a similar predicament. I've just loosened the last screw 
holding the oil pan on. Now, if it were full of oil, it would have fallen and 
spilt all over me. I'd drained it so ofcourse I found myself beating on it with 
a rubber hammer just to get it loose.

When in doubt, use force, besides, it rare you get an opportunity to hit your 
TR with a hammer.
