Ernie:

Not that important at all - welcome to the club!  Mine
hasn't worked in 15 years - same symptoms as yours. 
My guess is a gummed up fan motor.  

I actually got all excited last year when I had the
whole dash area apart while replacing the crash pads. 
I got in there and sprayed everywhere I could inside
the heater box with WD-40 hoping to free up whatever
was frozen.  Nothing. 

So on we go another 15 years getting free-flow heat on
those cold days only when moving forward.  The way it
should be anyway I guess.
