No

Beg to differ here. I've used 'barrel plating' in the past, which is zinc
plating (passivation) w/o polishing. It comes in silver, gold and black. The
bolts were not easily replaceable and not for HD use (e.g. steering). Also
had some brackets done.
Another choice was unpolished chrome-the parts were simply chromed after
blasting, which made them look like zinc plated but shinier. Hydrogen
embrittlement could be a problem on HD application bolts.

Not necessarily, but if you replace them, you won't have to worry about
the first part!

I'd suggest that the use of High Tensile bolts for timing covers and the
like is OTT anyway. Rule-of -Thumb: If in doubt, replace!

Don't!  The stuff is ugly and there is nothing like the sound of a good
timing chain!

Quite agree. However, the stuff looks like some sort of setting Mastic so
any heavy and reasobaly heatproof wodge should do.
