Looking for advice and opinions from those that have "been there, done that"
, because I haven't. It is time to do an engine rebuild on my '71 TR6, this
is apparent as the engine compression is below 100 on all cylinders. While
I am planning on a complete rebuild; bearings, thrust washers, rings, cam
bearings, valve train, yada yada, I thought, "while I'm doing all this why
not spend a little extra and get a little extra horsepower". Since I am a
complete novice at getting a little extra out of a stock engine, I find the
possibilities confusing. Things like high performance heads (like the one
available from Goodparts), hotter cams (like the GP3 and Kent), roller
rockers, headers, high performance carbs, and on and on. They all promise
to offer the extra zip but I get the feeling that when you get something you
have to give up something in return, let along trying to figure out the
right combination from the different possibilities. So I am asking for
advice. Looking for the combination that would put me in the area of 130hp
to 140hp, smooth with good street manners, quick but not a pain to live
with, more fun to drive (translate faster) but still reasonably reliable.
Being an engine novice I have found a good shop to do the work and now would
like to get the ideas from the list on what work to have them do.
