Hi All,

I was just conversing off-list with another lister who has purchased the
New Zealand/Toyota 5 speed tranny but has not installed it yet. I'm
currently running the NZ solution in my GT6c and was wondering if anyone
else has gone this route and what they thought of it. The car in question
has a 1970 GT6+ engine with minor modifications: 3/8 studs, roller rockers,
headers and currently running Mk1 150 SUs. To me the whole ratio is too low.
First gear is so low you can take-off on flat ground in second with-out too
much clutch slipping; but you wouldn't want to make a habit of it. So 5th
isn't all that high. I had much taller gearing using the standard Standard
o/d tranny and a 3.27 rear-end. I'm beginning to think that the o/d tranny
with the 3.63 rear-end is the one to try. One last thing, I've found you
really need to be careful downshifting the NZ tranny from 5th to 4th or you
might re-define the reverse gear. On the plus side, there's no doubt that
the shift action is more positive and the Toyota T-50 is rated for 150+ HP.

My .02,
Richard English
