Mitch,
I started with a new TRF dash for my '74. The finish they provide is
nothing close to the original but the workmanship on the wood is very nice
and they do use a multi-ply panel like original.
I sanded the dash with 400 grit, brushed on 6 coats of minwax golden oak
finish (like tinted clear). After every 2 coats dried, I sanded with 400
grit. I topped it with 12 coats of minwax spar urethane satin (spray). I
set the dash out on our deck for 2 weeks to dry in the sun. I then sanded
it with 1200 grit, followed by 1500 grit, then hand polished with rubbing
compound.
The dash finish looks as thick as orignal, a very similar color to an
original dash, and just enough gloss to look good, but not glare.
Am I happy with the results? YES. I probably spent 12 hours (spread over 4
weeks) refinishing the dash. Since I plan to spend many hours behind the
wheel with the dash in front of me, I think it was worth the investment.
