Sounds like a blocked or kinked pipe. I had the same problem and
rather than wash it out obtained a length of copper bundy tubing with
the correct unions. All in place, neatly coiled - and of course,
polished and the gauge works fine. Trouble is, few (if any) Triumphs
had copper oil pipes so this is likely to offend the originalists
