John,
I also have a '76 TR6. My commission number is CF52678U, and my engine
number is CF42733UE. This is the original engine, and the BMIHT agrees. I
would suggest that your engine block is likely original. However, there is
only one way to find out - get your car's build certificate from the British
Motor Industry Heritage Trust in Gaydon, England. You can find a link to
instructions for ordering this certificate on the Moss Motor's (California)
website.

After doing a little research, a few sources suggest that for the 1975 year
the comm numbers go from CF35001 to CF39991 and engine numbers start at
CF35001. For the 1976 year the comm numbers go from CF50001 to CF58328 and
engine numbers start at CF50001. So my question is assuming that they made
the same number of engines as cars, where does my engine fit in? Do I have
a 75 or 76 engine?
