Brian,
Since my steering column is totaly restored and I now have overdrive I can
tell you what I ended up with.
1) the TR4 column switch is the 'short stem' version that matches exact
length of turn signal switch. (TR4A to TR6 had varying long-stem versions
-what you probably have). TRF noted in a sale catalogue last year they
unearthed 7 NOS TR4 short-stem OD switches and put on sale for $100ea! (rare)
I got lucky and found a NOS one on eBay for $35.
Although many pictures indicate OD switch on left side I believe right side
is correct and have seen a picture or two of that also.
With the proper switch in the off position - the stem is UP. Your switch is
incorrect for the right side.
>From what I have heard regarding OD engagement - setting the alignment hole
on the test arm to 'just past the hole' is a common fix.
Good luck with it.

Subject: OD Switch Placement and Update
Listers,
Need some info from you TR4 guys and anyone who knows. I have
installed and test driven my rebuilt OD and most everything is
OK.
I have some confusion on the column switch location. The drivers
manual shows the OD switch mounted on the left hand side of the
column and the turn signal on the right... if OD is installed. I
never had an OD equipped TR4 and need some help.
Before checking the book I installed the switch on the right side
as I have seen on other cars at events and shows. The stalk
seems a bit long too me... and ends up at the 4:30 position when
off and up at 3:30 when on. Is this how is supposed to be. It
does make it close to your shift hand when needed.
If I completely reverse the orientation of the switch escutcheons
I could get it to go to the 1:30 position for off and 2:30 for
on. But that would mine getting a new decal for the turn signal
side.
What is right position for everything???
BTW, when I test drove the OD last weekend and engaged by
leaning over and pushing down on the lever... I got instant
engagement. Today... after wiring everything up and using the
solenoid... I get a get a 5 second delay before engagement. I
will have to set the solenoid to push the lever past the hole
designed for adjustment to get the full flow for proper
operation.
Damn... under the car again!!!!
