>I received new brake caliper pistons to rebuild the TR8 calipers I am
going
to put on my TR7. The pistons are relieved so that there is not a
continuous
contact with the back of the pad. The question is where should this "open"
area of the piston face?

Mike,

The closed end of the piston should face into the caliper and the open end
contacts the pads. This minimizes the amount of fluid it takes to fill the
system. It will also reduce heat transfer from the pads to the fluid.
