1/4" sounds impossibly large, are you sure the fan attachment hasn't
come loose on the motor shaft ?
It's not too difficult to reduce the motor's endplay, but you likely
will have to able to solder. Start by finding some thin brass flat
washers with a center hole of around 1/4". Remove the heater assembly
from the car and completely field strip it, removing the fan from the
shaft and then the motor from it's mounting plate. Mark the relation of
the motor end plate and the body of the motor, remove the six securing
screws and carefully pull the plate away far enough to unsolder one or
two of the wires that run from the field windings inside the body, to
terminals on the brush holder. Note which wires go where. If I
remember right, it's easier to leave the armature in the end plate, and
pull it out of the motor body. Clean off any old, dried grease. Pick a
stack of washers slightly smaller than the end play and put them on the
motor shaft. If you're really trying to take out 1/4", split them
between the top and bottom. Then do a trial assembly, and be sure that
there is still a detectable amount of end play, and the armature turns
freely. When it's right, disassemble one more time and add some light
grease to the bushings. Assembly is, as they say, the reverse. Don't
forget to solder those wires back in place.
Yes, there's a chance you will screw this up. But, the alternative is
to buy a new motor, rendering the one you have junk, so what have you
got to lose ?
Once the heater assembly is complete, run it on the bench for a few
hours before struggling with reinstalling it.
