Started to remove the valves from my '59 TR3 engine head (which
is on the work bench). I have been successful with one valve but
am really having problems with compressing the springs to release the
split cotters. I tried using the generic lever that attaches over
the stud but could not get it positioned over the cap. I got a
compressor that has 2 legs that attach to the spring and then you
screw down the center piece that is supposed to compress the
springs. This "pulls up" the springs rather than compressing them.
If I push down on the knob, I can get some compression while
I have a spacer supporting the valve under the head, but this is
not consistent to release the cotters (this is how I got the one
apart).

Any thoughts on technique or specific types of compressors would
be appreciated.
