The oil also helps conduct heat from the wires and core to the case.
However, it is supposed to be completely full, or at least nearly so.  If
it's significantly low, it may not last very long.

BTW, I think this disproves Sumner's statement.  Lucas was fully capable of
making a computer that leaked oil !

And a more serious note, the oil may well contain PCBs (which were the
quality transformer oil when these cars were made).  If so, you probably
don't want to get it on your skin if you can help it.  It's technically
hazardous waste, although I promise not to tell the EPA if you just drop it
in the trash ...
