If it's an old belt, I would suspect the belt.  Second most likely is too
loose, followed by tight (defective) bearings in either the water pump or
generator.  Too tight usually does not cause problems with the belt, rather
it causes bearings to fail.  Of course, that could be why your bearings have
failed, but it usually takes longer for the problem to show up.
