72 gt6. new rebuild. took it for a longer ride late today. it ran smooth as
glass at cruise speeds. i varied rpm between 2000-3500 (max) cruising more at
approx 3000rpm +-200. i noted at 3000 rpm the speedo said 50mph. is that
what other gt6 owners get ? just checking accuracy. i could swear that as
this 30+ mile drive went on, i could feel the engine starting to loosen up a
bit. that is the bearings, rings etc. it just seemed to rev a little
quicker. am i imagining this ? or is it noticible ? a problem i noted is
that once the engine was fully warm/hot, if i turn the engine off, then try to
start the car, the starter will not turn. just a quick snag and it sits, no
spin, no click. i checked voltage with digital meter at battery. 12.6 volts
with car off and cool. 14.2 volts with car idling at 1500 rpm. so why does
the starter not work when engine is warm/hot? if car is cold, starter works.
if hot and i have to start it, i can put a battery charger on it for 10
minutes and then it will start. however, i don't know if that is because the
engine cooled for 10 minutes or the battery charger pushed the battery higher
to get more current to starter. my previous timing question is a burning one
to me. what should the timing be at 1000 rpm ? what should it be at 3000 rpm
? should the vacuum line be on or off when doing timing ? i had it on, set
timing to 13btdc at 3000 rpm. i noted it slowly drifted to 2btdc over approx
10 seconds. at that point the idle dropped so low it stalled. lucas dist.
with one vacuum line to thermo unit on radiator. other hose on thermo goes to
rear carb. any feedback and answers to these questions are greatly
appreciated. oh, and where can you get a tire iron to fit the 11/16" lugs ?
thanks ! larry lstein6@earthlink.net
