How'd that get there?

I was replacing/repacking my wheel bearings when I noticed a rather
large groove dug into one of my rotors.  My first inclination is that a
rock or some other foreign material got between the rotor and the pad,
but I was wondering if there could be some mechanical reason that I
should look into?
