michael p. gave me a ton of great advice and asked me to clarify the following
(i should have been more clear)

it turns over great ! same hot as cold. it does not fire. if i hold the
throttle to the floor it tends to sputter at least, but does not start at all.
if i don't give any gas i don't get a sputter of firing at all. just cranking
(like cranking cold with no choke).
