Well,
there is a growing concern in Sweden [particularly in the transport
sector and the motorcycle business] regarding the percentage of young
people who nowadays don't get a drivers license - for various reasons:
[some do later when they are more financially established in life]
the cost of driving lessons [the going rate seems to be ~1 USD per min]
the political incorrectness of cars and their environmental impact
the low need for a car in urban areas
the advanced level of the tests [both theoretical and practical]
the lack of interest from employers to recognize the extra effort a
drivers license is in ones CV
etc
Us older geezers don't have those problems. Most of us got our licenses
as quickly as it was ever possible - and allowed. But most of the above
reasons wasn't in effect back then. Cost was considerably lower, the
tests was manageable, cars was a valued asset in society and 'everybody
got one'... And! We got our motorcycle license for free so to say. That
is another 'lots of money'-effort these days...
