I would say definitely a mod - I've had 15 different TR3s and never saw
anything like you describe.

Oh -
I meant to ask this question as well -

On each side of my rear axle, at the top of the tube facing back, just
inboard
of the backing plate mounting flange, and outboard of the axle oil seal, are
copper tubes 1.5 inches long that are mounted into a hole drilled through
the
axle.  They are held in place by what appears to be lead or solder.

A guess would indicate that they are some kind of breather.  Does anyone
know,
and are they original or a mod?
