Paul, although this won't answer your question exactly, I remember reading 
somewhere that TRs were not known for their fit and finish.  ISTR that 
whatever source I was reading used the less-than-perfect gaps of the body 
panels as the example.  Being a relatively inexpense sports car, they were 
run through the assembly line fairly quickly.

I went out this morning and measured the door gaps on my '56 TR3.  Both 
lower horizontal gaps were very tight - probably no more than .20" to .10" 
to virtually no gap at the back of the passenger side.  This is opposed to a 
front vertical gap of .45" at the widest spot.  The rear vertical gap was 
.30" at it's widest.  Bear in mind that my car has been hit and repaired a 
few times.  My car is freshly painted and the body shop probably spent some 
time getting the gaps to line up as close as they could.  Also, this is an 
early TR3 so the body toolings may be much different for a later 3A.
