It does seem a bit crude I suppose... but I have never had a problem 
with those connections.  They can be quite resistant to loosening & the 
effects of corrosion -- conditions that sometimes plague slip-fit 
connectors.

For later TR owners:  I think Joe is referring to the connections at 
gauges, voltage regulator, etc that TR2s thru early TR3As used, later 
supplanted by Lucar/spade connectors.
