I don't think you'll ever completely remove them. Even though you may have 
them *stretched* in place on the car over winter, is the garage heated at 
all? Heat will certainly help older style plastics and my suggestion FWIW is 
to try to stretch them somewhere where there's warmth and to gently increase 
the tension in the weeks that follow..
