Called John Swager at TRF regarding use of gear oil for TR rack & pinion
steering and (short answer) he said yes he believes it's a good idea based on a
local fellow that does that.
I'm not fully convinced at this time and plan to use smaller doses of grease
but a little more often.
I inspected over twenty-five TR racks at TRsOnly a few years back -
surprisingly, most were badly worn in the 'straight ahead' driving position,
i.e.; 1
tooth out of the 7 on the pinion, and the corresponding 2 center teeth on the
rack - worn skinny. Neither the rack nor the pinion gears are available new and
no amount adjustment, grease, or gear oil, gonna fully make up for 'gone
metal'. You can flip the pinion so the worst tooth is opposite from 'straight
ahead' driving position, but no easy fix for a 'center' worn rack (welding
buildup/regrind).
Keep those rack & pinions well lubed my friends!
