My guess would be that the pressure relief valve in the oil filter head got
stuck open somehow.

A cleaning and inspection wouldn't be out of place, but being lazy I'd
probably leave it until the next time it happens.

And if you're using Castrol motor oil, you might want to switch try another
brand.
