Much smarter people than I are going to respond, but here's my thoughts. But
first, a follow up question. How long has it been since the carb, like your
engine, was rebuilt? Reason I ask, if throttle shafts are worn, they might
start sucking air a tiny bit as the engine heats up as it idles for a long
period of time. Then as you run the engine, the temperature drops down a bit
and the carb contracts ever so slightly back onto the throttle shafts. There
are ways to test it by spraying some sort of chemical (not sure what kind) on
the throttle shafts where they go into the carb to see if it causes the engine
to speed up.
Doubtless not the right answer, but sure was fun thinking it!
