I don't know which gear you need=C2=A0 off hand but I believe that 72 was b=
efore the conversion to the "1000 turns-per-mile" standard found on the lat=
er models which means they all got the same gear and the speedometers were =
calibrated to suit.=C2=A0 You can verify that by looking at the the speedom=
eter face near the bottom and you will find a number something like "1120" =
or "1000."=C2=A0 This will tell you which gear you need.=C2=A0 For what it'=
s worth, The Roadster Factory lists part number 147965 for models up to CF1=
and UKC5933 for models CF1 and later.
On the other hand, it is possible that the end of the speedo cable itself i=
s at fault.=C2=A0 It may have rounded off or broke and your gear may be OK =
after all.=C2=A0 Or, since you have overdrive, you have a right-angle drive=
and that might be at fault.=C2=A0 That part is 120694.

the cable seems to turn freely in the casing I'm pretty certain the drive =
gear down below has just lost too many teeth to engage. Memory tells me the=
drive is plastic. I have a J-type OD in my car. I ordered it built up by t=
he Laycock de Normanville descendants who work (I am told) with the origina=
l tooling. I had it done with the Volvo gearing (1.25). Three=C2=A0question=
s:=C2=A01 - Can I pull the gear out without having to remove the OD ? It lo=
oks like it's removable.=C2=A02 - Will I end up with a flood of transmissio=
n oil all over the place. i.e. should I drain it first?=C2=A03 - How do I c=
