Glad to hear you don=E2=80=99t have a water issue=E2=80=A6=E2=80=A6 If =
this is a new build the smoke you are seeing could simply be stray bits =
of lube burning off.

Fiddle with the timing a little, I use the factory recommended 4deg BTDC =
but other people have varied from this, usually more advanced.  =
Don=E2=80=99t know how much petro is in your tank so allow for that =
blending before you rule out premium gas as a solution.

Ok checked under cap, minor amount of black "soot" so thinking oil blow =
off?   Definitely no water.  Phew :-)=20

As for the temperature, southern Ontario yesterday was 24degC so nothing =
overly hot but motor did get up to 190degF. =20

So, try retarding the dizzy a bit or stick some premium fuel in as step =
one?

Shakedown runs are good, I try to get in at least 200 miles before =
buttoning up the interior =20

RE: Smoke from the breather.  Check you water level to be sure it is =
where you last checked it.  Pull the oil filler cap and look underneath, =
if you see a grayish gunk then you probably have water in your =
oil....not a good thing.  Clean it off and go again to be sure. =20

RE: Pinging.  Where do you live, hot day driving?  Pinging, or =
pre-ignition, can be either timing is too advanced or you need to step =
up the octane rating of your petrol.  In the summertime I always run =
premium.  This could be causing the engine to run hot and thus some =
smoke, if not steam, at your breather. =20

getting in the 100km shake out and seeing where everything is.  What I =
have so far

*       5w-30 and cheap oil filter swapped out for VR-1 20-50 and much better =
filter.
*       Gearbox oil drained ( unknown vintage ) and Valvoline MTL filled ( =

*       Looks like my attempt to adjust the fuel gauge is not working =
completely. =20

But some things I have noticed during and after a drive

*       After even a short drive, open the hood and vapors, do not know if it =
is steam or smoke is coming out of the valve breather=E2=80=A6.What is =
that?
*       Cruising along in 4th at about 100kph/60mph, give a little more gas I =
hear, what is badly described as a =E2=80=98pinging=E2=80=99 of =
=E2=80=98tinging=E2=80=99.  I am thinking the dizzy is advancing too =
far?  Or not far enough?
*       Looks like the MTL being a little thinner and as such is =
=E2=80=9Cweeping=E2=80=9D from places =F0=9F=98=8A=20
