Listers,
=20
I don=E2=80=99t know how large this list is in terms of names count but just=
before the Millenium, a very large number of you most kindly bought a book f=
rom me titled =E2=80=9CIn the Shadow of my Father =E2=80=93 Life at Triumph=E2=
=80=9D. Originally, I thought a thousand copies would be enough but it later=
went through two re-prints of 1,500 and 1,000 copies to meet demand and I s=
till have a few (less than 100) copies left. However, this post is not about=
 that book.
=20
This last week, I thought I=E2=80=99d let you know I signed a contract with a=
London, England publisher for my latest book called =E2=80=9CFROM IRON CROS=
S TO THE CROSS OF NAILS=E2=80=9D. It was originally my late father=E2=80=99s=
story to tell but he was dogged by ill-health after retiring from Standard-=
Triumph in the 1960=E2=80=99s and never got to write the narrative. After so=
me forty years of research on my part and several complete re-writes, the st=
ory is finished. If you=E2=80=99re interested in automotive history =E2=80=93=
especially if it=E2=80=99s to do with Jaguar and Standard-Triumph =E2=80=93=
you may well be interested in my latest offering. It concerns the escape fr=
om Austria in the summer of 1939 of two people, both Jews, who were the offi=
cial and only importers and distributors for Austria for cars made by The St=
andard Motor Company and SS Limited =E2=80=93 which post-war became Jaguar C=
ars. The two people in question were Hans and Monika Koch and a very compres=
sed version of their story appeared in =E2=80=9CIn the Shadow of my Father=E2=
=80=9D but in =E2=80=9C=46rom Iron Cross=E2=80=9D you get the full story in e=
very detail and you=E2=80=99ll get to *meet* Sir John Black (CEO Standard Mo=
tor Co) and Sir William Lyons (CEO Jaguar), read about some of their convers=
ations and how they helped the Kochs in the early weeks of their unplanned a=
nd very coincidental arrival in England just before the outbreak of WW2. Spe=
aking entirely for myself, the Koch=E2=80=99s story has always fascinated me=
because what husband and wife both did =E2=80=93 and on the spur of the mom=
ent without any prior planning of note =E2=80=93 to avoid the horrors of pla=
ces like Auschwitz, Bergen Belsen and Mauthausen to name but three places, d=
efies comprehension. But somehow, they won through and against the most extr=
aordinary odds. I didn=E2=80=99t get the bones of this story just from Dad b=
ecause in 1964 when my internship at Jaguar was coming to an end, I spent ni=
ne months in Vienna working for GHM KOCH AUTOMOBILE when it was still the Ja=
guar importer. That stay gave me a superb opportunity to check many facts of=
the story, read a lot of the documentation and study some important survivi=
ng artefacts to do with this man and his wife=E2=80=99s escape from the jaws=
of the SS and Reichsfuhrer Heinrich Himmler=E2=80=99s mob of sadists.
=20
That=E2=80=99s the basic background. The book is scheduled to appear in the S=
pring of 2023 but at the time of writing I have no idea of its pricing. I do=
know it will be available as a print on demand from Amazon in the UK, Barne=
s & Noble (I think), together with e-book versions and on Kindle. If you=E2=80=
=99d like more info when it becomes available, I=E2=80=99m working with the p=
ublisher to identify possible buyers. Just drop me an email to this address g=
iving me your name, postal address and email contact details and I=E2=80=99l=
l come back to you when more detail such as ISBN number and likely prices ar=
e available. Please feel free to circulate this email to your Jaguar and Tri=
umph club friends and if you feel your club newsletter editor would like det=
ails for a forthcoming issue, I=E2=80=99d be pleased to hear from him or her=
.
=20
Finally, I think this story is somewhat apocryphal as I signed the publishin=
g contract on the last day of Holocaust Memorial Week. A bit creepy, huh?
