 Not to be pedantic, but the original is a digital regulator.=C2=A0 It is c=
omposed of the bimetal spring and a heater=C2=A0 As the heater heats up the=
 bimetal spring will open the contacts and switch off the heater (and the v=
oltage to the gauges).=C2=A0 As the spring cools off the spring will switch=
 the power back on and so the cycle continues giving an average voltage of =
10 volts.
The electronic versions are actually analog.=C2=A0 They use a classic integ=
rated circuit voltage regulator that is a tried and proven part.=C2=A0 If t=
hey are prone to failure it is because the designer did not make proper pre=
cautions against the very unfriendly environment a car's electric power sys=
tem is.=C2=A0 This is especially true in older cars.=C2=A0 When loads are s=
witched on and off there are voltage spikes, both positive and negative, th=
at will far exceed the ratings on typical solid state components.=C2=A0 Mot=
ors are especially prone to doing this.=C2=A0 Heater fans, wipers, starter =
motors.
I have designed many custom electronic devices for my cars and I have never=
 had one fail.=C2=A0 But I don't cheap out on the protection devices.=C2=A0=
 The Crane ignition module is another example of an electronic device that =
stands up well to the nastiness doled out by the car's electrical system.

All that said, I still run an OE voltage stabilizer in my TR6.=C2=A0 Never =
found a need to change it.
