According the "history channel's" production of AUTOMBILES:

Ford sent one of his folks to negotiate the purchase of Ferrari,
including Enzo's services, and was successful in tendering an
offer....until it was discovered that Enzo would not have anything to do
with the Indianapolis 500. The deal collapsed....then Ford embarked on
his quest to overcome Ferrari.
