John Desantis,

The Northern New Jersey Region of the SCCA administers the former Volvo
Historic Series. They incorporate these events into existing Regional and
National SCCA races primarily at Lime Rock and Pocono. Typically, it's been
the third weekend of May at Pocono (two rounds) and the second weekend in
August at Lime Rock. They're still working on the schedule. It'll be set
after the Divisional roundtable meeting sometime this month.

You can find the Region's home page at

John,

There are three spectator vintage/historic events at VIR.

The VIR Motorsport Country Club's signature event is the VIR Gold Cup
Historic Races, presented by Berry Hill Mansion Marriott. Set for the
weekend of June 11-13, this offers perhaps the greatest variety of cars and
people. Vintage Motorsport's "Women in Racing" and the Moss Motors
International Triumph Challenge are the theme. There's a ton of stuff to do
with the family, car show, outdoor movies, pinewood derby. (Thanks, John
Rollins, hope you can make it back this year) The race groups offer a safe,
friendly (less crowded, this year) place for cars from VSCCA, VSCDA, CVAR,
SVRA, VDCA, CSRG, HMSA and a number of other groups, so variety is the order
of the day, there is even a place for Pre-War cars at this event. There were
about 240 cars there last year. Already, over forty entries have come in for
this year's event!

The July HSR event is typically where you see some extraordinary, fast cars
show up. The absolute track record that stood for three and a half years was
set here in an IMSA Chevrolet Intrepid in July 2000. This event typically
supports newer cars and there is a strong rear-engine, though not always
air-cooled, German car contingent. Historically smaller than the other two
in terms of entry, if you're a fan of the marque from Stuttgart as well as
IMSA and even ALMS prototypes, this is a very good event.

The October SVRA event is now vying for the second largest turnout of the
year in that organizations schedule. With around 300 cars coming out over
the last several years, this event showcases single-seater (Monoposto)
open-wheel cars, various other marque clubs and groups who put on a great
show during what has truly become a terrific weekend. Everything is on
display here, from 948cc Turners to Sports 2000 and (almost) contemporary
Formula One and Indy (oops, CART) cars. Great show.

In short, whatever weekend you come, you'll have a good time. I know I will,
I'll be on track! :)

-Peter

(Five weeks to Kershaw, eight weeks to Sebring, eleven weeks to
Savannah...so many events, so little time)
