My cousin, Darryl, sent me the attachment below. I am forwarding it out of
interest in what we really think our cars are worth. Please be advised I
have no financial interest whatsoever in Racetorations.

I see two small-mouth TR3s for sale in Hemmings: $37, 900 and $47,900 !!
Of course, the asking price is very different from what one actually gets
for a car. Two years ago I sold a fast-road TR3 to a guy in Europe for
$44,000, but I had to ship it over and it ended up a push. I have a friend
with a nice TR6 - refreshed, not restored, but no obvious issues. What
should he expect to get for it ? I have a TR3B with 8 years and 16,000
miles on it from restoration. Everything seems to be fine and it drives and
looks great. I was asked what I wanted for it. It's not for sale, but what
if it were?

So, if anyone has time to kill, fill in the blanks below:

TR6 - refreshed - no obvious issues

??

TR3 - restored 8 years - everything seems great

??

Small-mouth TR3 - new restoration - everything restored / replaced

??

Dave,
Thanks for your reply these are repro with some slight modifications. I
have seen these and they are exceptional. I a looking for the other variation
made of to 72 but that fit the 250/4/6/ It was a one piece design with a
lighter and ash try. It was also made by Amco. any suggestions on finding
photo of it.

Ken et al-

I have enjoyed reading this thread on TR consoles. Having taken several
longer trips in a TR6 and a TR 250, I often wondered why someone had not
developed an aftermarket console. To my surprise and pleasure, Harry
Beeker has done exactly what I thought was worthy of someone's time and
energy. His web site has lots of pictures of his product, which seem to
show a great reproduction of a useful period accessory.

Thanks for sharing the info.

Merry Christmas to ME, just early!

Ken,

The one piece console was made for the TR4 & TR4A. The TR6 AMCO console was
a 2 piece affair with a Kienzle clock instead of a lighter and ash tray.
The TR6 & TR250 already had an ash tray (& a lighter was an easy install
in-dash--both of mine have one), which would be redundant if one was in the
console as well. Instead you got an electric clock that exactly matched the
dash gauges motif.

According to my accessories brochure it was possible to buy just the
rear/armrest section, or the whole thing. If the whole unit was installed
it looked nearly identical to the TR4 one-piece unit, except for the clock &
it's mounting boss (of course) and the lack of contrasting piping on the
armrest.

I have one of the originals that came in a 1972 parts car. They're VERY
flimsy, and were very expensive (IMHO) for what you got.

Dave,
Thanks for your reply these are repro with some slight modifications. I
have seen these and they are exceptional. I a looking for the other
variation
made of to 72 but that fit the 250/4/6/ It was a one piece design with a
lighter and ash try. It was also made by Amco. any suggestions on finding
photo of it.

Dave, I don't know much about the Amco consoles, but the 4As all had ashtrays too, in the middle of the wood dash instead of on top as on the 6 cylinder cars. It was made of Bakelite and had a tendency to fall out and eventually get lost, leaving an unsightly hole in the dash. Years ago you couldn't get a reproduction and had to scrounge to find a used one. Not sure if you can get them new now.

Dave,
Thanks for the great info. I believe that the one piece was made as and an
option until 1972 and so sold continually until the 2 piece unit was
produced which would make it also correct for the Tr6. Atleast that is what I
uncovered in some of my research. The TR4 also had an ashtray on the dash so
the additional tray would be correct.. I have found a one piece unit and
it appears to be original. It has not been altered, but the armrest is
covered to match the seat design pattern as with the TR 4 with piping. I am
thinking that you could order one of two versions to match your model since
all other dimensions are identical.

Page 40 of The Triumph TR5/250/6 Companion has a b/w of a 250 center
console. Interesting 250 Accessories list shows std console at $49, deluxe
at $80. American Racing wheels @ 60.00!

My JC Whitney center console, while
not as cool as having an original or one of the nice looking repros, is
sturdy, looks okay, functional and a good price. Big thing is a comfortable
right arm when you're cruising and a handy compartment to put stuff.

Can someone provide a little more information on the JC Whitney Center
Console? I went online, but wasn't able to figure out exactly what people
are referring to.

Thanks, Greg Lemon

Let me forward. My message was on your message. See if it gets through. Just said
I was not happy with the JC Penny console I bought 2 or 3 years ago. Very poor
plastic hinges, just 2 of them and the cover did not seat into the storage area. If
there was any lateral pressure applied to the cover i.e getting in and out of the car
or reaching back to gather something from the jump seat, the plastic hinges would
snap. After 2 glue jobs and no response from customer service, I trashed the whole
console. It did fit nicely in my six and with better low cost construction would have
been nice.

Here is what it looks like in a TR6, there happens to be one on sale on e-bay

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Aftermarket-interior-console-/300813088863?hash=item4
609db785f&item=300813088863&pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr
I am sure that if JCW still carries it and you search for center console at
JCW it will pop up on the search. I bought one over 4 years ago and still
use it, it works great for me.

Lou, Does yours have just the 2 plastic hinges on the rear of the cover to lift it up
from the front?. Also is the top seated or recessed in the storage area so there can
be no lateral movement if elbow bumped or used for leverage to get in or out of
the car? It is a good looking console and mine did fit nicely by sliding over the
transmission cover without any need for drilling or screws. Just snapped the hinges
with very little side pressure. If they have made the improvements I would buy
another.

Yes plastic hinges opens from the back. Flat top as in the eBay link pictures I sent.

I have not had any problems with the hinges but I also do not put any lateral force on the top getting in and out of the car.

Mine just slides into place between the seats snug and can be lifted out in seconds for shows etc. if needed.

Think it was around $30-$35 when I bought it. Happy with it specially considering the investment.

If you still have the old one I would think you could replace the hinges to metal or put a piano hinge across the back bought at the local hardware store.

I've had the JCWhitney center console (arm rest with stowage compartment) for
about three years.
The arm rest makes driving quite comfortable.
Yes, the plastic hinges broke, so I replaced 'em with a piano hinge.
Yes, the lid slides back and forth (since there's no alignment ridge), so I
added a couple of aluminum slats under the lid which keep it from shifting.
Yes, the vinyl arm rest gets all slippery sweaty from my forearm in the heat,
so I re-covered it with a suede material.
Yes, the screws which attach the plastic box to the metal mounting frame
pulled through.
Yes, it's a POS; but I haven't given up on it.
I plan to replace the plastic box with a plywood box, make a good lid with a
lock (for handgun storage when I pop into the post office and stuff), and add
a lidded trash compartment behind (wind blows empty cigar wrappers out of my
open trash can behind the pax seat).
Sooo, other than that

I think I have opened up a can of worms from my original post about
consoles. The topic has move slightly away from my questions but the threads have
provided some good knowledge. Thanks to everyone.
My questions was only referring to the original AMCO option for the
TR4/250/6. I am looking for an pictures of a one piece and an original two piece
installed on a car. I have seen the ones built (repro) by Triumph consoles.
They are excellent and a better quality then the original. I would also be
interested in seeing a period accessory brochure that shows any options
for the console. I have seen in the past one that says standard and one that
says deluxe. What is the difference? Mine has all the standard items, ash
tray, lighter but also has a rear interior light on it. Is this a deluxe
option??

I put a couple of strips of velcro under the lid to keep it from slipping
side-to-side and breaking the hinges.B Works fairly well.B

Also, I attached a fold-up plastic cup holder (from Walmart) to the front
vertical face of the console.B Works well and doesn't get inB the way too
much when shifting. B

Doug Morris, NC

Here is my arm rest (JC Whitney version) with power outlets and cup holders
together with an additional fold up cup holder on the passenger side, mounted
on a home-made bracket and tucked in behind the dash support leg.

Seats are Miata of course and this configuration has held up well surviving
many long distance trips.

I almost dread asking this question (think best oil, best tires) but I really
need to know the consensus on the best brand of electronic ignition system to
install in my '75 TR-6. I had a Crane system leave me stranded on the side of
the road years ago and have been running points ever since. I'm ready to put
my toe in the water again and try one out. What is out there-and seems to
give the best overall service?

Bill,

if it comes out to a 123ignition (most sophisticated system imho), which is not readily available, have a look at

http://brits-n-pieces.com/shop/product_info.php/info/p7296

We do a conversion of the original 22D6 Lucas distributor to the electronic 123ignition (or 123\TUNE, if you like). I'll not throw in my 2 ct here because my opinion will not be seen as an objective opinion.

I put a 123 ignition in my TR3 and a second unit in my TR250. Apart from
having to adapt the tachometer to accept an electrical input, it was a very
straightforward procedure which I did myself.

The Crane XR700 installed by a previous owner in our GT6 MK3 has performed
without any problems for at least 5 years. We tried a Pertronix in our TR6
but it burned out, leaving us on the side of the road (we were able to coast
1/2 mile of the 1 1/2 miles back home). Pertronix replaced the unit with no
question but that one failed as well. As it turned out, I think the unit was
being fed with the reduced voltage from the ballast wire rather than the
full 12 volts that it needs. I can't fault Pertronix for that. The TR6 has
been back on points for the last 3500 miles. I may try electronic ignition
in it again.

Subject: [6pack] Electronic Ignition systems

I almost dread asking this question (think best oil, best tires) but I
really need to know the consensus on the best brand of electronic ignition
system to install in my '75 TR-6. I had a Crane system leave me stranded on
the side of the road years ago and have been running points ever since. I'm
ready to put my toe in the water again and try one out. What is out
there-and seems to give the best overall service?

I wish I had not junked it. Doug has some great ingenuity. I really liked the product.
Making Doug's improvements and the same price I would order it again. Any-one
have a part or product # from Whitney? It would not take much to make it a
comfortable option. Not that I want to carry my gun in it. I would shoot myself or a
relative. never owned one. My Daschund is enough.

Found it under armrests with a product discontinued note. No wonder after reading

price and good fit. If they had only invested a few dimes more!!

Whitney put them on closeout a couple of years ago. They sold their
remaining inventory for $10.00 each including shipping.
Someone in my club found out about it and posted the link. Guys were buying
2 or 3 of them. Definitely worth $10.

My Crane 700 from about 2000 has been flawless. Bought a Crane 3000 a few
years ago. Nice unit.with more features then 700. 700 is now a
backup. There's some more interesting solutions such as Mallory unilite or
123 where you can dial in different advance curves to suit your engine, but
you need an electric tach conversion.

Good with my set-up,

Same here. I've had an Allison (now Crane) unit on the GT6 for fifteen
years now, with no problems. I think some of the early failures that
queered people on the Allison/Crane setup was that the main cable had
more of a strain relief than a waterproof seal where it exited the case,
and moisture may have been a cause. When I installed mine, I forced
some sealant into and around the cable and it's survived driving through
some very bad flooding. It can't cure other faults, such as bad rotors,
but it's done yeoman service for a decade and a half.

Cheers.

Bruce (and others),

not with the option we offer. We build the electronics of the 123 into the original distributor housing. Works (and looks) like a charm, not only with Triumphs but nearly all cars, even pre-war!

Well, these aren't $10 each but they're worth a look,

Subject: [6pack] Stromberg Upgrade?
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: 6pack-bounces@autox.team.net

The original Strombergs on my '72 TR6 need some work. It occurred to me
that this might be a good time to consider an upgrade. What's the conventional
wisdom on the best replacement? I'm leaning toward the HS6 replacement kit
with K&N filters. The best price appears to be from Victoria British.

Has anyone installed the HS6 kit? Any thoughts, caveats, considerations?

Thanks for any input!

I fit 175 CDs to my TR250, much simpler and easier to set up right than the
CD2s, no emissions valves etc. and still look original at a quick glance.

Cost me about $150 for some used carbs and a comprehensive rebuild kit.

Steve;

Of course, if you want better gas mileage and to be able to quit tweaking/
more tweaking/adjusting your carbs, there's Throttle Body Fuel Injection!
I've had it for years and would never consider going back.

See details at http://www.pattonmachine.com/

The carbs can remain stock appearance from the outside, if you wish,
and the K&N's sold by TRF and others fit great!

NFI....

Subject: [6pack] Centre Console - Concours Scoring?
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: 6pack-bounces@autox.team.net

My car is definitely not concours oriented, and I know very little about
concours, but I'm mildly curious, how is something like a rare dealer
accessory like the Amco center console scored at a concours event? Are only
Triumph or Triumph dealer supplied accessories acceptable?

Bruce, great questions. I am not one either, but have a console and curious
about the standards. Since they were an approved dealer options, I would
think they are acceptable. There was one option up till about 72(late) or
early 73 that was a one piece set up. Could get standard or deluxe which had
a lighter and ash try. This setup was for the TR4, TR250, TR6. Amco then
produced in 73 a two piece unit which had a clock and you could get the one
piece only or the wrap around second piece. Both should be correct for the
TR6.

Subject: [6pack] Suspension?
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: 6pack-bounces@autox.team.net

Hi, and welcome to winter!

Bought my 1972 TR6 in 1996 (21,000 on OD).
Did
urethane re-bushing kits in front, rear and differential.
(And HVDA
conversion, paint, spoke wheels, factory hardtop, on and on..............)
Now at 65,000 miles (16 years old, like a baby?), is it a good idea to get
all of the new suspension parts for this? The urethane was a little hard on
the roadway, so I'm thinking

to put on stock rubber parts. Yea or no?
Thanks,
Rick Olson in NJ

Richard I don't think you'll get that much more compliance from the rubber
parts and they don't last NEARLY as long as 16 years. I'd stay with what
works. As for replacing everything? I would take out one of the one of the
front bushings to see how it looks and feels. If you are getting the "TR6
negative camber" when you look at the car from the dead-on rear it's probably
time to replace those.

Unless you are on a budget, the rubber bushings / suspension parts are not the
way to go. Much of the rubber these days seems to deteriorate rapidly.
Urethane or poly(pro?) is going to last much longer.

Does anyone on the net have first-hand experience working with Performance

160HP.

Yah they want just about $8,000 for the engine I want. I am torn between
supercharging and this. The problem I have is that I can't seem to find a
definitive "formula" to put together my own engine with the Moss
supercharger, i.e. which cam to use, compression ratio, porting, header,
etc. If there was a book on the matter I'd buy it (I do have the Kastner
gem). I have a low-mileage rebuild with good compression and a 10.1:1 head
currently so the head would have to go if I supercharged it. I have no
problem tearing into it if I knew where I was going with it. I don't want to
just hang parts on the thing as that leads to disappointment.

Thanks for your help,

Brian

If your motor is in good shape (compression, head, etc.) it would probably
be cheaper and easier to bolt on a Moss Supercharger kit. The blower will
make more a difference at the speeds we normally drive. If you're going
autocross or race that may not be the case. Building up a motor without
forced induction can be rather expen$ive.

I had a Moss kit on my old 72 Six. It really pulled hard!

Does anyone on the net have first-hand experience working with Performance
Research Industries (PRI) out of Oregon? They have some natural aspirated -6
engine build-ups that look very interesting and are indicating upwards of
160HP.

Thanks,

I would suspect that triple webers and a mild (or wild) cam will get you
most of that way for less money. I have the ZS triple carbs, mild cam,
lightened flywheel, shaved, polished, ported head, decked block,
rebuilt/recurved dizzy, petronix, and a few other bits. I was dyno'd about
100 at the wheels.

don't forget to upgrade the suspension and especially the brakes!

Await an upcoming article in 6-Pack, but I secured 160bhp at the wheels in
my TR250 with what Dave describes below. And Brian can get it for less than
$8000 starting where he is now.

They have a cool website and have some interesting ideas and some wind ideas
about headers that are a belnd of technology and a work of art. Their Mikuni
carb idea apparently is pretty neat.

However, becareful. I have heard of instances where they will not return
phone calls when they have your engine etc. Ask for references and hit the

I talked to Sean last night

Sean Alexander has three conversion kits left on the shelf.

If you are planning on doing this conversion, you may consider reserving one.

It takes Sean about 8 weeks to manufacture and assemble 25 kits and he has
three kids active in sports. :-)
