Gosh, I'm happy to be nominated I don't know where to begin.
I was born a poor... never mind. I'm originally from East Tennessee, where I
started honing my driving skills, by running the backroads and byways with
the likes of Johnny Miller IV of Trans-am fame. But that's a whole other
story.
My first car was a 1971 Volvo 142E that was my father's B Sedan racecar. I
replaced the bumpers and headlights and I was the envy of every 16 yr old in
the county. I started autocrossing in the ETR Region at the tender age of
16, but was my father's pit crew at autocrosses and road races from the age
of 10. Along with the Volvo I also owned a '67 Austin Mini, '58 Volvo 445,
and a '76 Trans am, all before the age of 18.
After "gradiating" from high school, I moved to Cleveland, TN and attended
UTC in Chattanooga, working on a BS in Graphic Arts. I meet my wife of 15
yrs there and we moved to Florida a few years after we were married. We have
3 children ages 8, 19, & 18. I am currently employed at The Printing House
Ltd in Quincy, FL as the Estimator. One of our sister companies is Homes &
Land Magazines, which are produced and distributed nationwide.
We moved to Tallahassee in 1992 and started autocrossing again in 1996 after
a co-worker "gave" me the '74 Spider in drive today. I was able to capture
the '97, '98 and '99 C-Stock Championship in The Dixie Region. I was worker
of the year in '97 and Member of the year in '98 (or vice versa).
I've always been active in the Region. In '97 I was elected as a board
member and in '99 was elected Assistant Regional Executive. I'm always one
of the first to arrive at the event, either setting up the trailer or
registraion table. My consitant worker position is that of an event
supervisor, making sure all is fine and dandy in the area. You can also find
me working the PA system from time to time (someone please take the mike
away from me), but fellow DTN driver David Hawkins does a much better job;)
Currently, I am the SEDiv Solo2 Registrar for our Solo2 Divisional series. I
am filling the shoes of one Ms. Brenda Ashburn, who will be missed at the
events as an official.
My current autocross car is a '74 Alfa Romeo Spider, while not the best
looking (rusting away) or handling car in the world. It is an absolute blast
to drive and watch! I'm often asked how I keep from dragging the door
handles, when cornering hard. I was however able to capture the SEDIV
C-Stock Championship in '99 driving the ole Alfa! Currently I am preparing a
'71 Datsun 510 for Solo1 and eventually road racing.
I'd like to thank everyone on Team.net for their informative, if not always
serious posts and Mark B. for hosting the service! I've been fortunate
enough to meet the likes of Phil Either and his Lotus and was even able to
arrange a ride at a "rally cross" in Minnesota a few years ago, by using
Team.net! Did I mention my SEDIV boss is MaS?
So, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!
And if elected the 2000 DTN, I promise octane boost in every tank, a new set
of BFG's every year and not to bring up the twelve days of autocross ever
again! I'll even bring JD Kemp with me for luck!
Regards,
See ya'll at the Ozark SEDIV Divisional!

I have over 5000 miles on my set so far. I just pulled them off the car last
night to do the rear brake pads and bleed all four corners. They are wearing
very well, there is almost no signs of wear and I have been pretty hard on
them. They are great in the rain as well. I doubt you would do much spinning
of the z pig unless you wanted to. Not a top of the line tire but a very
good value, probably the best tire I have ever bought for the money.

Whoever it was that said autocrossers are the worlds best (worst?)
procrastinators hit the nail on the head.
I've been planning to go to the Milwaukee Cnediv event this weekend, but
put off making hotel reservations. As it turns out, this is the main
weekend of the state fair, and there are literally *no* hotel rooms to be
had.
So here's my plea: Does *anyone* have a room with an extra bed or

in the place has SOME hidden talent, the show was created to recognize
those who may not drive the absolute best, or have the latest/greatest

I'd say I would be pretty darn hilarious if drunk, seeing that I don't drink
that often. Two beers and I'm liable to wear Mari's dress.

Definitely sounds like you need a cover of Phish's "Cavern", off "A
Picture of Nectar" (1992). It closes with an entire verse of phrases
that rhyme with subframe connector:
Give the director a serpent deflector
a mudrat detector, a ribbon reflector
a cushion convector, a pitcher of nectar *
a virile dissector, a hormone collector
Whatever you do, take care of your shoes
* Alternate lyrics include "a penile erector" and "a picture of
Nectar"

Aww Mari, don't fret. I vividly remember your rendition of Shania Twain's
"That don't impress me much" song. Might be the dress that actually makes
it so rememberable. ;^) What I thought was funny was that as soon as you
were done you changed back into plain clothes for comfort. Then later, at
least once, you had to change back into the dress quickly when you were
called back up onto the stage. You ran into that little side/changing room
and back out in about a minute with a complete change of clothing. Heck, it
takes me that long just to untie my shoes. ;^)

consideration to different weather conditions were
given.
The D Stock heading means the time for the fastest
Neon. The G Stock heading means the fastest time
for:Type R,Turbo Eclipse/Talon,Camaro,Corrado(ie
current G Stock cars)
The average time differential for 1999 was G Stock
cars faster on average by .617 of a second.
The average time differential for 2000,so far,is 2.178
seconds that the G Stock cars have the advantage!
Hopefully this will help the "Dont put Neons in Class
8" discussion, and help the SCAC in their decission.

Since Kuhmo only covers Stock and SP and Hoosier includes Prep/Mod, I wonder
if the numbers would be closer if you pulled the race tires (slicks) out of
the Hoosier list........

Since Kuhmo only covers Stock and SP and Hoosier includes Prep/Mod, I wonder
if the numbers would be closer if you pulled the race tires (slicks) out of
the Hoosier list........

The DTN Nominee recap:
Nominee #2:
David Hawkins
suppose I'm the only one not to pony up some personal
info so far....so here goes:
I started autoxing in Seattle 4 years ago when I went to an
event to meet up with a fellow MR2 owner. I plowed the
course with my 89 Supercharged car and then came back
the next week to get a ride with Glen Hernandez and get some
insight into how it should really be done. I was hooked. I moved
to Pensacola the month after my first autox and got involved with
Gulf Coast Region right after I got settled. The first year was spent
learning the car and attending as many events as I could. The
second year I was appointed Solo II Co-Chair and made it my
unofficial job to bring down the course speeds while making the
courses themselves more technical (since no one was providing
course maps, I figured I'd come up with some that favored my 112HP
MR2). While Solo II Co-Chair, I championed the cause for a novice
program and ride-alongs in the region (fruitlessly, but I fought the good
fight). Last year I jumped to Dixie Region since I was running there
every month anyway. I try to help out as I can, but being 3 hours from
the site doesn't lend to my abilities in that area.
I try to build up autoxing wherever I go, as I think it does have a direct
impact in how good of a driver you are everyday life. I've chosen to
stick with some of the most profoundly classed cars despite their
weaknesses (93 Mr2 Turbo in ASP, 85 ITA Mr2 in CSP, 86 Mr2
in CSP, Toyota Cressida in EM), and pass on whatever setup information
I learn to whoever happens to ask (and some who don't happen to). I
still compete in Gulf Coast Region every month, and am still championing
the need for ride-alongs, in addition to running in Dixie every month. When
I can convince the SO to let me, I run Wiregrass too :)
I was pretty strong in the running last year, but didn't want to create a
conflict in my region (JD was from Dixie also) and it didn't look like Uncle
Sam was going to give me time off anyway.
Personal Background....I'm 31, with a BS from the Naval Academy in
Aerospace Engineering. I resigned my commission last month after 10
years on active duty and look forward to some time of my own and the
inevitable job hunt. Mr2s have been my passion since I bought my
first new car, the 93 Turbo, in August of 1993. I've owned 14 of them
and currently have bits and pieces of 7 parts cars scattered about the
house in addition to the 93 in the garage and 86 which is in the
middle of an engine rebuild. An 88 Supercharged car with an uncertain
fate sits in the front yard. My first car was a 1966 Corvair, which I
restored with my father and which now resides in his garage awaiting
my purchase of a larger storage area. I pulled Dad into the SCCA at
the final Divisional of 1998 when I bought him a membership for his
birthday and surprised him with a co-drive when he came to watch me
run.
But...I'm rambling. I really enjoy this forum and hope that I add to
it when I can. If you see fit to send me to nationals, I promise to
wear a big DTN T shirt every day and shake the hand of every
team.netter that I run across. I'll even keep a few cold ones in the
Winnie for ya.

The DTN Nominee recap:
Nominee #3:
Karl Rickert
I'm always one
of the first to arrive at the event, either setting up the trailer or
registration table. My consistent worker position is that of an event
supervisor, making sure all is fine and dandy in the area. You can also find
me working the PA system from time to time (someone please take the mike
away from me), but fellow DTN driver David Hawkins does a much better job;)
Currently, I am the Sadie Solo Registrar for our Solo Divisional series. I
am filling the shoes of one Ms.
I was however able to capture the SADIE
C-Stock Championship in '99 driving the ole Alfa! Currently I am preparing a
'71 Dotson 510 for Solo and eventually road racing.
I'd like to thank everyone on Team.net for their informative, if not always
serious posts and Mark B. for hosting the service! I've been fortunate
enough to meet the likes of Phil Either and his Lotus and was even able to
arrange a ride at a "rally cross" in Minnesota a few years ago, by using
Team.net! Did I mention my SADIE boss is Mass?
So, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!
And if elected the 2000 DTN, I promise octane boost in every tank, a new set
of Hoosier's every year and not to bring up the twelve days of autocross
ever
again! I'll even bring JD Kemp with me for luck!
Regards,
See ya'll at the Ozark SADIE Divisional!

The DTN Nominee recap:
Here is nominee #1:
Ian McFetridge
I was so surprised when I saw my nomination, that I didn't even have the
information necessary to decide if I could accept or not. :-O Well, as of
today, I know that I can get time off work, which had worried me because I
do not have the necessary vacation days and I had a product release that has
fortunately been pushed off until November. So, I grateful accept my
nomination and offer a little bit of information about myself:
Born Philadelphia, PA in 1969; moved to Orlando, FL in 1984, received a
degree in Material Science and Engineering from the University of Florida
(Go Gators!), completed some graduate work in BioMedical Engineering; took
time off to work in industry. Moved to Boston in 1993 and worked for a
Pharmaceutical company doing drug discovery and medical device development.
Went into consulting in 1997 and moved to the Philadelphia area where I am
now doing a little bit of everything to do with pharmaceutical technology
and regulations.
I've always been into sports, segueing from BMX racing to motocross dirt
bike racing (man, I wish they had the Speed Freaks program back then),
dropping back into mountain bike racing during the lean years of college and
then graduating to my first "sports car" after college. When I was in
Boston I replaced my boring Explorer with a Mitsubishi Eclipse and I've been
boosting ever since. :-) Some of the local DSM tweakers invited me out to
a dragstrip and I quickly began to modify my car, eventually dropping my
quarter mile time down to 12.9 @ 106MPH. The straight line thing was fun,
but I craved something more and followed some of the DSM guys out to this
autocross thing I had been hearing about.
A couple autocrosses and a trip to the Diamond Star Shootout in Ohio and I
was hooked on autocrossing. I competed in my first season of autocross in
1999, unmodifying (reinstalling the stock boost controller, raising my 1/4
mile time to 13.9 @100 MPH, yikes!) my 1992 Eclipse GSX to compete in
Philly's ESP class. I found the Philly Region to be chock full of nice
folks willing to help a novice like myself learn the sport. I was so
impressed with the camaraderie and the quality of the novice program that I
started dragging every DSM and import racer that I knew to the local events.
In the spirit of wanting to give a little back to our club, I became a
safety steward and volunteered to assist a much more experienced
autocrossing with the job of Chief Solo II safety steward in the Philly
Region. At the end of the season I realized that my 130,000 mile DSM wasn't
going to make it through another season, so I purchased a fairly modified
1997 Eclipse GSX (12.0@114MPH) with the intention of competing in this
Street Touring Unlimited (now Street Modified) class that I had been hearing
about. I helped-out as best I could with the rules so as to not preclude
many of the local import and domestic drag racers and motorheads in general.
Hopefully, this class will continue to grow as more street prepared folks
install their subframe connectors and manual boost controllers.
Thanks again for the nomination and seconds to the nomination. Please feel
free to stop by and say hi to the tall guy in the white Eclipse at any
Philly event, Northern New Jersey event, or the Divisional in Rome, NY.
Best Regards,
Ian McFetridge

What, other than you taking second at the National
Tour? And owning up to the "RX7 KLR" License plate!
Now I guess it'll have to change to "360 KLR".
Congrats.

Hi Everybody,
I'm going to be visiting family in the Chicago area over Labor Day
weekend. I see there's an AutoX scheduled at Route 66 Raceway on that
Sunday. Can one of you Chicago types tell me if this place is worth
the trouble of carting all of my stuff from Ohio just to run one day?
I'm trying to get in a few extra days before heading to Topeka the
next week.

it's a roll of the dice. turn-outs have been huge in Joliet - if it goes
smooth you _might_ get 5 runs. the surface is big and real grippy for
asphalt (when clean). if rt 66 has a dirt track event or some other event
on their dirt track that weekend (which is right next to the lot) it could
be real slippery.
it is a totally awesome place to race - which is probably why so many people
show up.
you will either have a total blast or leave really pissed... seems to be no

I'm hoping that somebody may know where I may find a part for a Mikuni

shops that specialize in this carb (Rebello, Malvern Racing) with no
luck. They get their parts from Mikuni America (whom I've also
contacted) so that's not much help. The part I'm looking for is a pump
nozzle #90. Apparently it's the largest size it comes in but fairly
uncommon. Anyway the carb is going on a Mazda 12A rotary engine. If
anybody has any leads I will be most grateful. Thanks,

AVERAGE MARGINS
---------------
1999 ALL 17 EVENTS:
w/Daddio: -0.324 (GS ahead)
w/o Daddio: -0.772 (GS ahead more)
1999 ONLY THE 8 EVENTS THAT DADDIO RAN:
w/Daddio: +0.713 (DS ahead!)
w/o Daddio: -0.238 (GS ahead!)
1999 ONLY THE 9 EVENTS THAT DADDIO DIDN'T RUN:
-1.247 (GS way ahead)
2000 ALL EVENTS (No Daddio):
-1.942 (GS in another county)
Yes, there is no accounting for weather and course favoritism,
and yes, there is probably a better way of looking at it other
than average raw time differential, but I think some points can be drawn.
If you look at the '99 results, it is apparent that Daddio is inhuman! ;-)
Seriously, I hate to single him out like this (he is human, and he can
be beat, as shown above), but his presence skews the results remarkably.
While the overall '99 average is slightly in GS's favor, with Mark removed,
the average margin jumps from .324 to .772 - a significant difference I
think
even though lots of variables are uncontrolled/unaccounted for.
Looking at only the events Mark did or did not run is even more telling:
with him running, DS wins those 8 events by an average of .713
without him, GS wins those same 8 events by .238.
So, should the Neons to the new 'Class 5'?
Well, someone asked a while back if it's any different to get beat by
Daddio by 2 sec. or beat by McCormick/Stratton/etc by 2 sec.
Theoretically, no, but when you get beat that bad by Daddio (I have
some experience here :), you KNOW it is something you could do with
better set-up and skill. It gives you a target to shoot for that is
attainable.
It is going to take a heroic effort for someone to match Daddio's
performance
(without having him as a benchmark), and run a Neon competitively against
the type R's and DSM's. Plus, are the GS cars getting quicker with better
set-up? Could even Daddio catch them now?
I don't know.
Have fun,
John Ryan

DS/Neon ACR
tongue in cheek epilogue:
I have another theory - Chrysler is engineering the SCAC restructure!
Why? They want all the DS Neons to go to ST and kick butt there so Chrysler
can claim victory over all the imports! Much better marketing!

We had a great time at the Tour. The weather was outstanding, around 80 -
85 both days, clear sky.
Curt did do very well in the Ferrari, and to be honest, I'm surprised there
hasn't been more traffic on this. The competition was good all weekend. AS
was again well subscribed with a number of very good drivers here.
I'd say the course had a little of both handlind and horsepower, with one
section at the top of 2nd gear in a left/right sweeper, followed by a turn
around that was 1st gear in the S2000.
Unfortunately, the Phantom broke it's drive belt as Gary tried to start onto
the course on Sunday. He paxed everyone by about 1.5 seconds on Saturday!
It was absolutely amazing (as it always is) to see them running the car on
Saturday!

I'll agree with Mike's reply for the most part. The lot is huge and we get a
solid 60 secnd course depending on who designs it. The surface is a very
smooth asphault with no poles. If there has not been a dirt track race grip
is quite good, but if there was one, it will be slick for the first heat or
so. We run 4 heayts, and each entrant runs in either evens or odds, so if you
are stuck with the first heat, you should get at least 2 more tries in the
third heat after most of the dirt is brushed off.
Our turnout at Rt. 66 has been running well over 150 cars, and we did get
stuck with just 3 runs once, we usually get 4 or 5 there, and did manage 6
runs a couple times. When we only got three, we had trouble with getting 185
cars with alot of first timers entered into the computer and such. For some
reason, Rt. 66 tends to draw people we never see anywhere else, and many new
people coming to their first ever autocross. Not that this is a bad thing,
excelpt that they sometimes do hold things up with a re-run or whatever. But
as we should, we try to help out the newbies and get them up to speed.
I would recomend pre-registering and get there early if you want a good
padock space. With the slow operation from the huge turnouts, there is talk
of enforcing our 150 car limit. Not sure how that went as I missed the last
CR SCCA meeting.

There are some good directions for getting to the Peru event sight
at http://www.tsscc.org/. These directions indicate:
"The entrance to Grissom Aeroplex is off of Route 31. If you come
from the North you will see a large sign and an exit off of Route 31 for
Grissom Aeroplex-DO NOT FOLLOW THAT SIGN!!!! Stay on Route 31 going South
and look for a water tower. The entrance that we MUST use is the same
entrance for the correctional facility and close to the water tower. Once
you turn off of Route 31 follow the pointer cones to paddock.
DO NOT ENTER GRISSOM AEROPLEX FROM ANY OTHER ENTRANCE!!!"
One addition I would make to these is that after turning by the
water tower, take the first right, which is really close, then take the next
left and you should be heading towards the entry gates, if memory serves me
correctly. Also, for those who wonder, as I did, before going to Peru the
first time, there is a Clark gas station very close (1/4 mi) to the event
site that also has a Subway Sandwich shop, a TCBY Frozen Yogurt and a large
"general store".
Following these directions seemed to work for the Peru NT. Hope this
helps others as well.

Define popular, four Cendiv BFG events this year total of 16 cars, average
of 4 per event, low was 1, high was 7.
I understood the one of the main reasons for STS, STR, SM was to bring new
people to the events, I think this has been very sucessful in STS and STR
but many of the cars that run SM appear to be experenced autocrosses who
have just moved their car to a different class.
Lets see what goes at Nationals this year before we start adding classes.

Hi Team!
I just had the question run through my mind. Since
the Type R and the DSM(whatever that stands for)Turbos
are not currently allowed in STS ,with the proposed
changes, will they be? Or will the NEON no longer be
eligable for STS?
When they created the class STS,they had the
where-with-all not to place the NEONS with the Type
R's or DSM Turbos, how come they decided that the cars
should become classmates in their stock forms?
Any info would be greatly appreciated as it will be

reclassifications.

system, PA system, generator, etc.
Please note the following event info:
DO NOT come to the event site before 6:00 pm Friday. Even though the site
gate is open we are not allowed general access before this time, as this is
an active military site. The course design has already been laid out and
marked which should allow us to set it up quickly. We will be allowing
additional course walking time Saturday am before starting the event.
The Holiday Inn on US Hwy 231 in Ozark, AL is the official event hotel. We
have rooms blocked thru July 28 for $50-night which includes a full hot
breakfast for 2-people per room in their restaurant; call 334-774-7300 for
reservations or contact me if you need an alternate hotel at 334-324-1701.
The event site's concrete surface is known for being abrasive; be sure to
bring good tires to compete on. Portions of the course will also be running
on the adjacent asphalt runways; expect a sweeping, windy course in the 50 -
60 second run-time range that is both safe and challenging.
August can be a very hot time of year for southern Alabama; please be sure to
bring any shade you may own and plan to have lots of fluids on hand. Lunch
will be served on-site both days compliments of Jean Kinser's Evolution
Performance Driving School.

What's your source for those numbers?
USA Today says...
> NHTSA says it has reports of 21 deaths and 193 crashes involving those tires.
While I don't want to say there isn't a problem with the tires, I wonder how
many of those incidents are due to underinflation, which seems to the main
cause of "just blew with no warning." On top of that, add in the possibility
that the Ford Explorer could be a bit on the tippy side, you have a recipe
for a problem. (Add in my pet peeve - how many were on the phone at the
time?)
How often do you think people *really* check their tire pressure?
Ford did issue a tech bulletin when the Explorers first came out telling
dealers and tire dealers not to put any tires other than light truck
all-terrain style tires on them, as the vehicle wasn't designed to handle
any increase in cornering power. Any connection?
I wonder how many problems the same tires have been involved in on the more
stable Subaru Forester?

The stock classes and ST (S or R) have nothing to do with each other. ST has
everything from 3 series BMW's to zero HP econoboxes. The classes have NO
correlation at all.
Keep in mind that all limited slips (except viscous) and all turbo cars are
DISallowed in ST - regardless of the HP of size of the motor. Makes no
difference what class they are in with regard to stock classes.

Any info would be greatly appreciated as it will be
included in my 37th email to the SCCA regarding the
reclassifications.

Seems reasonable to me.
They make tires too damn good, in the old days (yes I am old) if a tire had
low tire pressure you could tell by looking at it now you can have 15# in a
SUV tire and not be able to tell by looking at it. On top of that they last
forever, again in the old days getting 20K miles was good so you changed
tires ever year or so. If the tire blew it was always the tube that went,
the tire didn't come apart.
Can we go back to tube tires?

Well all I have to say is, Firestone does it again 8^0.
A few years back their "721" tire would come apart on cars.

Everyone is welcome to come autocross at the Georgia State Solo II
Championship in Perry, Georgia on August 26 & 27. This event is co-hosted
by the Middle Georgia SCCA and Atlanta Region SCCA regions.
The Championship event will be held on 5 adjoining parking lots just
outside the North entrance gate to the Georgia National Fairgrounds in
Perry, which is located about 1 1/2 hours south of Atlanta on Interstate
75.
This event is in conjunction with the "Georgia MotorFest" car show and

entrants will be pitted and staged inside the gate so our competitors'
cars will be part of the show during our event.
In order to compete for the Georgia State Championship, in your class,
you must enter and run both Saturday and Sunday. However, entrants may
run either single day if they choose. Entry fee for both days is $45 and
for one day the fee is $25. This event is open to SCCA and non-SCCA
members over 16 years of age who have a current driver's license. Drivers
under age 18 will need to have a Minor Waiver signed by a parent or
guardian at the event site.
The Georgia National Fairgrounds is located just east of I-75 in Perry.
There will be signs on the interstate guiding you to the site. Go to the

No. Once before you load up the car. Once when you roll the car off the
trailer at the event. Once right before your heat starts. Once after
each spin (got up to 50# in the rear after my imitation of a ponycar spin
at last year's states). Once before your co-driver's runs. Once at the

Subject: used tires in Sportscar
Has any autocrossers ever purchase the used tires advertised in Sportscar ?
I think they're Goodyear brand and advertised at full to 1\2 rubber left.
Anyone with experience here ? If so, prices and you comments, please !
thankx.

Not unless they change the rules for STS/R eligibility.

No they didn't. The Neon is listed as an "example" of an eligible car, but
it is not specifically classed in ST. The Type R and the Eclipse/Talon Turbo
are not specifically excluded, they just fail to meet the criteria.

Whose they? I think you're looking for conspiracies where they don't exist.
The SCAC does not worry about classes outside of stock when they are
classing stock. The Integra GS/R runs in GS against both your offending
examples and is a good deal slower than a Neon in stock trim.
Same can be said of the Probe/MX-6 and Camaro. There was a time when those
were the "big dogs" of GS. Things change.

Why do you think the SCCA cares about *our* speculation regarding what
*they* were thinking. If you want to impress them, send facts. Fact is that
the Neon and Type R are pretty close. See the recent post regarding winning
times at NT events. Cars that consistently finish within a second of each
other are pretty evenly matched.
Otherwise, you could always come over to Street Touring. Love to have you.
