I like roadworthy cars with "patina." (Handy, when you're also a cheap SOB.) Like anyone, I'd like to have a TD at a bargain-basement giveaway price that only needs relatively minor work to be roadworthy, but I don't care if it has a home paint job, a blanket seat-cushion cover, electrical gremlins, missing door panels, or 30 year-old orange shag carpeting.Of course, typically the beaters are overpriced, as the owners only see the potential of their cars, not the hundreds of hours of work and thousands of dollars in parts that it will take to realize the potential. (Not suggesting that of you, of course.) There was actually someone local selling an old VW-based TD replica in poor shape for $5,600 a couple of years ago. Gasp. On my last outing with my '53 TD stopping the car became quite an adventure involving standing on the brakes as hard as I could and crossing my fingers that she would stop in time. My first thought was leaking rear wheel cylinders which I recently rebuilt, but on closer inspection, I found that gear oil was the culprit, leaking from the bottom of the rear axle seals. It is worse on the left, but also present on the passenger side (right). This leads me to believe that I did something wrong during my resto in replacing these seals. There is a picture in the MG shop manual of proper placement of the seal, but little description of how it is to be seated. The photo also leaves a lot to be desired in clarity. Can one of you long-time T guys help me out with an explanation of how to properly remove and refit these seals? Also can you comment on how to clean the brake pads, if that is possible? I hate to have the car off the road when the weather here in the western North Carolina mountains is so perfect for TD cruising, but to me being able to stop is almost more important than being able to go! That is especially true when returning the TD down my steep basement drive to the garage. I don't want to damage the car OR the house! Thanks in advance. There is no need to remove fenders etc. BUT, please be careful as the coil spring can come out with a LOT of force if you don't remove the shock properly. Make sure you support the car on the underside of the wishbones so the coil spring is still compressed when the shock is removed. Now there should be no load on the upper shock pivot bolt. The car will still be supported by the spring. Also support the brake drum so as not to strain the flexible brake hose after the kingpin is free. What would be better financially? It all depends on how much time you're willing to spend, what condition it is in, how complete, and what you need out of it $-wise. There are always folks looking to buy up parts or projects. As far as breaking up a complete car in fair-to-good condition, I wouldn't do it. You may (may not, too) get more for individual parts if you want to spend the time to remove the part, advertise it, ship it, and go on to the next part. Often you end up with all the good stuff sold, and a pile of less desireable stuff that's too good to throw away, but no one really wants. It's your personal preference really. I vote for less trouble, sell it as a car, not parts. Lucas/Girling company name. I can resleeve your master cylinder in brass. Can also supply new rebuild kit. Problem I have found with the replacement master cylinders, is that they changed the internal parts. Last 4-5 years, before rebuild. The new style rebuild kits cost more than the old style rebuild kits.
