Well, my MGB has been inactive for some time, while I have been sorting out
the carburetors. Here is a partial rundown of the process so far:

[Problem -- solution]
Sticky piston -- fitted a different suction chamber; dismantled, cleaned and
reassembled both carbs; centered jets.
Pulled the pipe out of the jet when refitting -- ordered new jet from Moss.
Rear carb not returning to idle -- removed idle cam & spring and reassembled
with washers in correct position.
Rear carb still not returning to idle -- discovered throttle lever was loose
on shaft; peened lever, added washer.
Rear carb STILL not returning to idle -- discovered shaft was bulging at
ends of butterfly slot, causing it to stick; sanded down shaft to round
section.

The array is reassembled (again), but between downpours and early sundowns I
haven't got them set up or synced yet.

Missed a scheduled backroad run on the last sunny weekend, too.

Today in Northern California was a beautiful break in the rainy cold weather
we've been having. Fired up the MGB and ran around town in it running errands
and enjoying the smiles and thumbs up from folks out shopping. I'll never take
for granted the gift of the climate I live in that allows me to run my silly
little yellow no-top car all year round.

Been trying to enjoy driving the wife's '79 MGB. The car tends to leave me
places, but, with enough recent "fiddling", it is been better than ever. It
now starts easily enough, doesn't stall, and seems to enjoy being driven. It
seems to have always wanted to be a pleasant car, and now, it may be! Still
miss my Midget, though...
Anybody got a good car for sale?
Tom

Here in Arizona it's finally getting cool enough to work on cars outside.

My daughter (13) is working on her first restoration, a 1970 MGB. The
intent is that she gets it finished by the time she gets her driver's
license. Before the summer got too hot we pulled the exhaust, the fuel
system and the exterior lights. Recently we contructed one of those
temporary garages from Harbor Freight over the car and she'll finish
stripping the interior next. Hopefully over Christmas break.

On the not so MG side (but still very MG) I'm tearing through a '69
Sprite right now that was supposed to be her mum's first restoration.
But, now we're expecting, so I got left with this car taking up prime
real estate in my garage. Right now I'm stripping and restoring the
electrical system and dash. Next is the carbs. Should hopefully have
the engine/tranny out, last of the bolted on bits off, and the
external sheetmetal off the car by Christmas. Then it's blast, paint
and reassemble.

Jody,

That is brilliant! - about your daughter I mean. My daughter was
dead keen on my cars and she was the only one who wanted to drive my
old Maserati - others were scared of its power. But now my
granddaughter leans more to cars than my grandson. I have a
delightful photo of her helping me with the MGB GT V8 when when was
about 11. Give your daughter a hug from me !!

It's been a lot of fun so far. :)

I've had to arrange for her to get her own VB catalogs in the mail,
otherwise we fight over the MG one when it arrives. It's also been a
good help getting grades up as better grades = higher parts $ bonuses.

Here's a video of her introducing her project:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCu9jiwR2Rs

One tip to any other parents who want to do this: buy the kid their
own basic tools (sockets, wrenches, etc) otherwise yours will
dissapear!

Hi Jody,

Nice daughter, nice project and nice video!

One suggestion: buy her quality tools. (Over here: Gedore, Stahlwille, Facom. Over there???) They will last a life time.

I was around 16 or 17 when I started working on cars (minimum age for driving license = 18y over here).
Bought (myself) nothing but the best I could afford, even in my days as a poor student, considering that the cost of tools is much less than what you save by doing it all yourself.

More than 40 years later I still have and use the same tools!

Saw something typically American on the video: the levered (?) radiator cap. Have never seen them in Europe, only in the U.S..

What are they called and who makes them?

Bert

Bert,

She still has a bit too much of a propensity to lose tools, so I'm
sticking with the cheapo Harbor Freight stuff for now until she stops
losing things so easily. Then we'll work on a proper toolkit.

The radiator caps over here are vented, that's the function of the
lever. The theory is that you pop the lever, it vents and cools down
to a safe level before you completely open it. The reality is that you
burn yourself on it while removing the cap too quickly causing a
coolant fountain to occur at the front of the car as it boils over. :)

Subject: [Mgs] Ring groove width tolerance
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: mgs-bounces@autox.team.net

Hello Friends,

When it comes to technical issues beyond my knowledge, I turn to you guys, independent of the engine manufacturer.  The engine I'm building is a Lotus-Ford Twin Cam from a '65 Elan S2.  Here's the story and the question;

Bore = 3.250"

First compression ring = 0.083" ring groove width, ring is designed for 0.078" width.

Second compression ring = 0.079" ring groove width, which is within spec.

Oil ring = correct.

Lotus specifies that the groove width limit is 0.080" but that's for a new engine. My question is whether 0.005" is a little too large for an engine destined for mild street motoring (with a few moments of spirited driving tossed in). Or am I going to have to source custom rings? :-o

Thanks in advance for any and all advice. Respond off-list if desired.

-rick

Rick,

I don't have any Ford/Lotus references but all the ones I have suggest
that .005" is the upper limit for piston ring side clearance. Custom
rings might be an alternative but the ring grooves in the pistons will
have to be machined to true them up. New pistons may end up being a
cheaper and easier alternative.

Charles Hill

Nice video. You mentioned that the air filters were missing. I do
believe I glimpsed them in the seating area.

Rick I once had a 65 Elan S2 and still have the factory issued shop and
parts manuals. If you think those tolerances are listed in there I will
check for you. They are in my library of shop manuals that go back eons. I
sold the cars buit always kept the shop manuals for ever car I ever owned.
Let me know if the list can't provide the help you seek. I am surprised
Barney hasn't responded. Even tho it's not an A he seems to be knowledgable
about many more cars that As.

I don't know anything about the product.

But if your car is running too hot, you should address the problem with it. Go
through the cooling system. Is the radiator flowing properly, is the water
pump working properly? Is the block clogged? Is the thermostat functioning? Is
the fan ok? Is there a missing shroud.

Don't treat a symptom, treat the problem.

Also, remember that the gauges on our old cars are showing what's actually
happening, instead of electronically moved to 'N' and then not moved
regardless.

If you aren't loosing fluid, you aren't overheating.

Paul.

Merry Christmas to all.
I just read an article on Evan's Waterless Coolant
and wonder what experiences any of you have with the product. I have a AH
100-4 that sometimes runs hotter than I think it should and wonder if the
product is worth the $40 per gallon price. Thanks in advance for any
responses.

Assuming its not a gauge issue... You may live near a radiator shop that can
do a rod-out/clean out. The guy near me just did my MG 1100 for $60. They
take the end tanks out and poke rods through the holes to get the crap out.
Sometimes they are plugged up so bad they need a new core, then you're talking
$300+ depending on how big. Find a place that uses Maine Radiator cores.
Between your presumably original end caps and their old style cores nobody
will ever know its not original.

Great advertising, isn't it? Just two words. Forget it. If you
think it is running too hot now, it is likely to run hotter with
Evans Waterless Coolant. This stuff has much lower specific heat,
meaning it carries less heat for a given temperature rise. Stated
another way, it needs higher temperature rise to carry away the same
amount of waste heat from your engine to the radiator. It is very
similar to using 100% glycol based antifreeze with no water. Bad
news in hot weather.

Maybe for your worst enemy. I saw this earlier. Strikes me as a deathtrap.
Not fast enough to mix it up with traffic, not legal on the sidewalk or
bicycle lanes, much less rider protection than a motorcycle, inherently
unstable under braking.

I think the traditional monowheel is cooler, although it shares many of the
same deficiencies (and some additional issues).

If it's not steaming or losing coolant, it's not overheating. Unlike modern
cars where the temperature gauge is 'modified' so that it stays in the same
place through all normal variations in temperature, it's quite normal for
this era of car to go up and down according to conditions. I've seen both
my V8 and roadster on the edge of the H zone in very warm weather and
neither lost any coolant. If it's fluctuating, or high in cool weather,
then that is a cause for investigation, not trying a different coolant.

Forgot to mention the other little problem: in re-tightening the front
"lever & pin", I broke the bolt. Of course I couldn't find an exact
replacement at the hardware store -- the nut was some odd size that neither
5/16 or 11/32 fit effectively (I assume that was 21/64, but WHY????). So I
grabbed a pair of metric bolts that take an 8mm perfectly (a pair, so that
the same socket would fit both). I also ordered a new unit from Moss, but
when it arrived I refused to put it on the car -- it was just too cheesy
(yes, even cheesier than using metric hardware). The piece was just a bent
stamping -- instead of the pressed-in round pin, it had a bent flat tab. I
wasn't convinced that it would actuate simultaneously with the other pin,
based on the completely different shape. Plus, it just looked cheap, like it
was from a Geo Metro (my baseline for cheap construction -- everything on
that car was a cheap stamping, including the axle nuts).

Anyway, it's all back together, tuned and test-run.

During this process, I discovered that the heater valve control cable had
become detached. The set screw was spinning in the cable clamp, but a new
screw seemed to fix that.

While I was at it, I thought I would try to center the steering wheel, which
had been bugging me -- it was a tooth off-center. But in order to undo the
nut, I had to remove the horn button, and starting this procedure brought to
mind the problems I had had installing the new steering wheel, which was
slightly thicker. Anyway, the three set screws around the edge of the hub
all had stripped slots. I managed to back one out purely using friction.
Then I unbolted the wheel from the adapter by removing the perimeter screws.
I couldn't remove the wheel, which was still trapped by the horn button, but
it gave me enough wiggle room to rotate the button and pry it off. Then I
loosened the center nut and removed the hub, and took it to my workbench to
get the stripped set screws out. I managed to remove two of them and fab up
replacements -- the horn button has a notch, so it can be slipped on over a
single fixed set screw.

I had marked the hub position, so I refitted it one tooth over, got the
wheel back together and tested the horn, which operated no more erratically
then previously. So I chalked that up as a win.

But if I actually want to drive it anywhere, I suppose I need to bow to the
calendar and fit the hardtop. Today, for instance, started off sunny, then
featured a succession of torrential downpours, many with the sun still
shining.

I have had the temperature gauge on my MGA showing about 100 lbs (look
carefully at an MGA temp/oil dial to see what I mean). Didn't seem to be a
problem. I run a non-standard 14 lb radiator cap and I did not notice any
great water loss.

Me too, I've seen the V8 with its temp needle at 60psi :o) Although that was
from steam from a blocked steam pipe, not the actual coolant temperature.

...I tend to ask my MG friends - even for non-MG quests! :-)

I'm rebuilding a friends Lotus-Ford TwinCam engine from his '65 Elan.  I'm having trouble sourcing the correct oil filter cartridge for this engine.  Here's the back story;

Many of these engines have seen long life and the pumps have been changed to the later spin-on filter design. This engine died early on and sat for 15+ years. It still has the original pump in excellent condition, and we want to keep it. The problem is that there was a design change between the first cartridge element and the spin on design, resulting in an intermediate cartridge - and the intermediate is by far, the more readily available element. Our engine needs the first, early design.

Can (and if so, will) any of you kind folks who have played with the Lotus TwinC or the little Fords using this same bottom end, please offer a filter number?

Thanks, in advance, and Merry Christmas!
