Just as a comparison ! In the 70's I sold Queen's University
(|Canada) a string of 8 disc drives and controller which needed an
air conditioned raised floor, each the size of a modern day washing
machine, at around $2,500 per month on a 48 month contract. Total
storage was about 30 Mbytes. I just bought 32Gbytes for $32 cash !!

So true!B

Its an interesting dichotomy that electronics are getting more compact but smart phones are getting bigger! Then again, B what used to be a communication device is now an entertainment system for millennials.

Expensive disk Barry!
I just bought 500 GB disk space for +/- $ 55 and this only as it is a small
format.
Bigger format external disk storage is +/- $ 70 for 1 TB of storage space.

And yes in the seventies prices for storage were immense.
Funny thing - we spent our holidays in London and we visited the Science
Museum.
Saw a Data General Nova 820 mini computer equipped with a 2.5 MB (!) Diablo
33 disk drive.
This system was exhibited as the DG system was the controlling system of the
world's first X-Ray brain- and bodyscanner.
I worked with these DG Nova systems in the seventies - I left DG in 1987.

Cheers,
Hans

Subject: [Mgs] testing a generator from a 62 mga
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: mgs-bounces@autox.team.net

My generator light came on the other day. Got out the voltage meter and
tested across the two connectors as well as one to ground. Nada. So I took
the geny out and found that the two slide connectors were heavily corroded.
My question is: is there a way to check a generator without reinstalling
after scraping the connectors clean? It is a pain in the rear to get in and
out as you know.

Thanks,

Clayton

I saw that too, but I think the red one was an Austin-Healey 3000.

I saw a nicorette commercial today with a red MGA, green MGB and maybe a
blue Midget in it.

Bring it to any auto parts jobber (Advanced Auto Parts,
etc.) They will test it for free.

You need to spin it from a variable speed source while the F and D terminals
are connected together. Monitor the voltage between those terminals and the
body, and don't let it go above 20v. If it can get to 20v then it probably
is OK, usually if the stator or rotor circuits are faulty it won't get
anywhere near that. It should reach 20v before the engine it is attached to
is spinning at 1000rpm, which is why it is better to test it on the engine,
if you don't have somewhere handy that can do a proper voltage and current
test.

Nisonger, in Mamaroneck NY, says that they are the sole USA link to Smiths,
and that they have all available Smiths/Jaeger instruments and repair bits.

Quite a few years ago Canadian Smith Instruments sold all their stock
to a chap called Ted Sapieja of Alfa Instruments, Torono. Many years
later he was confined to a nursing home by his daughter and his huge
stock was sold to someone in Calgary. Then 4000 pieces of gauges etc
were bought by someone out of Ohio and subsequently he
disappeared. Anyone heard of someone who fits this Ohio
profile.............I mean 4000 Smith/Jaeger gauges plus spare
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bob,

I know Nisonger well but I don't know if they bought the cache. I
visited Ted and was amazed at his hoard - the total hoard was 8 tons apparently
Nisonger will not sell you the rubber O-rings to restore your gauges
as it cuts into their restoration revenues severely - but I sell them :-)
