Time flies when you're having fun. Two weeks since my last mesage
here, so here goes.

Things have been flying here. We have driven over 4000 miles in the
past 4 weeks, and have visited pretty much everyone on the wish list
between Maryland and South Carolina (some more than once).

In the past week we got to Moss in Petersboro. Also visited Dave Mars
in Raleigh, NC, Jim Cheatham in Amelia, NC, the Central Virginia
British Car Club, Bruce Woodson in Richmond, VA, Bruce's
father-in-law Wally Groom in Powhatan, VA, Paul Crowther and a few
other classic car enthusiasts in Palmyra and Lake Monticello Lake
Monticello, VA, the Shenandoah Valley British Car Club (from
Waynesboro, VA) and Richmond Triumph Register (Richmond, VA) at Zion
Swisse in Herndon, VA, and Bob Krzywicki in Arlington, VA.

Keep up with our daily travel log and lots of pictures here:
http://mgaguru.com/tales/mobile.htm

Now we are sitting near Frederick, Maryland and we may try to sit
still for a day or two. Contemplating moving north into Pennsylvania
and farther. We might possibly get well up into Maine, as I came up
somewhat short there last time I was in this corner of the
country. Anyone want to help spinthe compass?

highly recommend Antietem and especially Gettysburg. plan to spend a day in
Gettysburg - take the bus tour of the battlefield.

http://www.nps.gov/gett/index.htm

and if you can - visit Antietem at dusk. we did, and we could feel the
spirits!

http://www.nps.gov/anti/index.htm

after gettysburg, Hershey, where the street lights are in the shape of
hershey kisses. take the factory tour - lots of fun! and be sure to visit
the Hershey Hotel. true turn of the century grandeur and great gardens. if
you have to ask how much, you can't afford to stay there!

I posted about this switch on the Digest recently. It's now on eBay if
anyone is interested. Item # 281352004142.

Also on eBay is my lightly used head and neck restraint - a Leatt Brace.
Item # 281352067514 After examining all restraints available, I chose the
Leatt for max safety. Unfortunately, Leatt didn't play politics and others
have been "mandated" in certain race orgs. But, if you race where you have
an option, this is a really good device - 360-degrees of protection. And,
virtually no chance your shoulder straps will slip off to the side. Look at
the pictures & you'll see why..

In replacing the water pump on my 1980 MGB LE I discovered the pulley consists
of three parts: a large and a small pulley and a ring. In my haste I forgot
the correct order. Any of you with a RBB can do me a huge favor by looking at
the configuration on your car and let me know the correct orientation. Does
the smaller pulley go on the inside closer to the engine? Secondly, is there
some simple method for lining up the 4 bolt holes thru the pulley so they
properly align with the holes on the water pump Any suggestions will be
greatly appreciated.

Barney:

If you are going to Hershey, consider staying until next weekend.

The Grand Ascent (aka Hershey Hillclimb) is June 13 - 15 on the grounds of
the Hershey Hotel.
Details at: http://theeleganceathershey.com/event/the-grand-ascent/

You can expect to find at least a couple of vintage MGs racing up the hill
(Friday and Sat.) along with lots of other interesting vintage race cars.
(I will be there with my supercharged TD.) If you are into car shows,
there is a spectacular concours on Sunday.

Hope to see you there!

Can't help on the pulley, except to say that doing a trial fit of the fan
belt will tell you which way round it goes, as with two different sizes the
wrong one, when it is in line with the crank and alternator pulleys, will
either be too short or too long. But I was under the impression that all
the pulleys were one-piece, regardless of how many 'slots' they had.

The pump should have a flange with perhaps eight tapped holes on the face,
four at one distance from the centre and four at another. I've just changed
my water pump and the pulley simply fits over the flange such that you can
see the four appropriate (probably the outer ones) holes are visible through
the pulley holes, I just positioned the flange with one of the holes at the
top, then fitted the pulley over it also with one of the holes at the top.
If you don't get it exact it should be close enough to get a small probe
through both holes to line them up for the bolts. My pulley say on the
flange quite happily, while I offered-up the fan with bolts, locktabs,
washers, spaces, and rubber grommets (for metal fans). If your is supposed
to be multi-part then you may have to fit the pulley over the fan bolts and
get the alignment of the top bolt with a top hole as close as possible as
you bring the fan etc. to the flange. If you have a long-nosed pump i.e. a
deep pulley it might be tricky getting fingers in the back to hold the pump
still while you turn the fan etc. to find the holes. If your pump has a
drain hole underneath you might be able to press a soft drift up through
there to hold the shaft while you do it.

An easy way to get pulleys on the water pump flange is to take a spare bolt of
the correct size and thread and chop the head off. Screw it into one of the
correct holes and then thread the pulley etc onto the flange. Start the other
bolts then unscrew the stud and install the 4th bolt.

Recently replaced the water pump on my MGB LE (1980). It started and drove
perfectly after that. This morning it would not start and I get a click that
sounds like it is emanating from the ignition relay which was new since I
replaced it last week. The battery is fully charged and all the battery
connections are secure. There are no blown fuses and I am at a total loss as
to where to look next. Any suggestions from others who may have experienced
similar issues or who might have a clue will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Frank,

Long time since my last visit.
I expect the pump has nothing to do with the starting problem.
Did you look at the starter solenoid high current connections?
On my GT the screw thread was worn on the starter solenoid, so the nut did
not firmly keep all wiring sockets tight to the solenoid.
At this point also the battery wire is connected.
For low current electrics the connection would work, but high starter
solenoid & motor current makes a high tension loss over just a little
resistance already.
I replaced the solenoid and it works fine.

Hope it helps.

Cheers,
Hans

Hello All,

I got asked a question today and was not sure of the answer. Does anyone know
if a 1500 engine tranny with a triumph overdrive will fit on a 1500 midget
without any body modifications?

Thanks

You will have to track the voltage through the circuit from the key via the
relay to the starter solenoid. There are no fuses involved in cranking or
running the engine.

Do you have an ignition warning light? If so does that dim right down when
you get the click? If so then either battery, solenoid, or engine earth
strap connections are bad.

If that stays bright then as well as the relay making a click as it operate
the solenoid makes a clonk. Normally you can't hear them as the solenoid
drowns out the relay and the motor drowns out the solenoid. So first
determine whether it is the relay or the solenoid you can hear. They are
quite different but if you haven't heard them before, particularly being on
the 'wrong' side of the car (I presume) when you turn the key, they could be
confused. Have someone turn the key while you listen and feel from the
relay (on the inner wing by the fusebox) side.

If you can hear the solenoid clonk then either it's contacts are bad, or the
motor itself has failed in some way.

If it's the relay and not the solenoid then test the four connections on the
relay while the key is turned to crank. You should have 12v on the
white/red, brown and brown/white and 0v on the black.

If you have that then the problem lies with the solenoid or the connections
to it. Test the connections at the solenoid for voltage. If you have 12v
getting onto the solenoid spade from the white/brown then the solenoid is
bad.

If you have 12v on the brown but not the brown/white then the relay is bad.

If you don't have 12v on the brown then the connection back towards the
solenoid is bad, but if the previous tests are good that is unlikely.

Still researching my starting issues and believe I have narrowed it down to
the starter or its solenoid. I have a new hi torque starter in my spares and
would like to know if anyone has installed one. Is it a straight swap? Any
wiring changes required? Does it have its own solenoid? Any advice will be
greatly appreciated.

Hi Guys, can someone confirm the measurement from the front edge of the
bulkhead top panel (where the heater mounts) to the radiator mounting panel on
the inner wings of an MGA please? I'm replacing the inner wheel arches on the
car and one side has sustained an impact at some point. I have 23.5" on the
good side and would like to confirm this is still correct before setting the
damaged side to the same.

Many thanks

There can be modern geared starters, and what are described as 'hi torque'
starters which are not geared but by use of more modern techniques still
offer an improvement over the original starter. Geared tend to be double
the price of the standard starter, hi-torque not much more than normal

I'd expect both types to come with a solenoid, indeed with the geared type
the solenoid is usually the part that is in line with the pinion, and
actually larger than the motor, but you will have to look at the starter you
have to see.

With the geared type it is all down to the adapter plate on the front of the
motor assembly as to whether it will fit the MGB or not. Some of these come
with a captive bolt as the motor position obstructs it, others are
orientated such that both bolts can be removed and inserted as normal. The
most important thing to check is how the adapter plate has been attached to
the motor assembly. I tried one several years ago and it was just attached
with a couple of self-tappers and super-glue, and came adrift in a couple of
days.

The number of teeth on the pinion is supposed to be important, the original
inertia starter on the MGB (and all MGC) had 9 teeth, MGB pre-engaged had 10
teeth.

Most solenoids only have the solenoid operate terminal, and don't have the
coil boost terminal that rubber bumper standard starters originally had. A
few might have this extra terminal.

PaulH.

I installed one on my 1980 B a few years ago, because the post on my solenoid
had broken. It was a pretty easy swap, and it included its own solenoid.

I got the bounce post last week. What it meant was that the server's
posts to me were bouncing. I sent a post to Mark, saying I was still
here. Looks like Mark has it under control. We oughta each send him a
sawbuck for his efforts.

Yes, at the moment the list is working for a lot of folks, still getting DMARC bounces for some.
What fun.

Also the archives at http://www.team.net/archive should be searchable again, but there are big chunks
of it missing. I'm working on getting it updated as best as possible.

The forums were never really used much, not sure if I'll put much effort in bringing those
back to life.

And thanks to those of you who appreciate the effort and make use of the donate link.

mjb.
