HAPPY NEW YEAR! fellow afflicted LBCer's. Off topic question for you.
We're planning a trip to the Montreal F1 race in June and wondered if
any of you have pearls of wisdom in the way of helpful suggestions,
i.e., good viewing corners, places to stay, easiest way to get to the
track, etc. We're presently looking at Grandstands 21 & 24 at the
hairpin and would get a 3 day ticket (no choice but we would do that
anyway). Half the family is flying there and the other half is
driving(we'll be leaving the car at the hotel.) We've looked at some
web sites but first-hand knowledge is always appreciated. Thanks in
advance!

Dave

Buy the three day F1 Metro pass and take it to the track. Yes, it is a huge number of people, but they have really got it figured out and it was painless.

Subject: [Mgs] Old MGB parts - what's worth keeping or selling?

Hi, I'm trying to make some space in my garage, so I'm going through boxes
that haven't been opened in 10 years. I have a lot of parts that I pulled
from the parts cars (1978 and 1979) I used to rebuild my 1980 MGB after it
caught on fire. I've got a mix of parts, mostly small enough to pick up and
put into a box. The largest piece is a flywheel, but there are a couple of
starters, a Z-S carb, some emissions parts, old wiring harnesses, some
plastic parts (fan blade, windshield washer reservoir) - basically, whatever
I could easily remove.

So now it's a decade later and I need the room more than I need the parts.
Is there anything that I should look for in my boxes that is hard to find
and might be good to sell on eBay, or anything that I shouldn't even bother
wiping off and just take it to the metal recycling station? There are a lot
of air pumps, tonneau bars, jacks, etc. listed on eBay, so I don't want to
go through the effort of listing everything if there isn't really a market
for it.

Thanks. I'm located near Boston, MA if anyone wants to take a look.

--Steve (1980 MGB, plus parts)

Steve, I would put together an inventory and just list it as one lot - buye=
r takes all - at a reasonable price. If you're just willing to dump it all =
at a recycleranyway, then you should put a price on it a little more than y=
ou'd get at the recycler. That way, the parts stay in circulation, you clea=
n up some space and get somebucks back on your investment. Put it on craigs=
list first, for free...

After I finished building my MGB GT V8 I had lots=20
of parts left over - both new and used. I put=20
them on eBay and got a total of more that=20
$2,500. Funny thing was that the parts I thought=20
would go did not, but the parts I thought no one=20
would want went like hot cakes. I also used Kijiji.

After I finished building my MGB GT V8 I had lots of parts left over -
both new and used. I put them on eBay and got a total of more that
$2,500. Funny thing was that the parts I thought would go did not,
but the parts I thought no one would want went like hot cakes. I
also used Kijiji.

Tom, I have been using synth oil in my =E2=80=9962 mga for over 10 years. =
In fact, I use synthetic in all of my engines, even my lawn tractor.
Costs more $$$, but much better lubrication.

Tom,

Yes, I would recommend using a synthetic. =C2=A0My personal favorite is =
20/50 Valvoline VR1, it's designed for racing but I use it because it has =
zinc in the mix.

I use synthetic oil in my '57 MGA. However, more important than
synth/non-synth is to ensure that the oil includes the necessary zinc
and other compounds necessary to protect flat tappets.

Mobil1 15w50 also has the recommended zinc level for older engines. Just =
that one weight is specifically designed for flat tappet engines (you =
can look it up on their applications sheet). And it is intended as a =
street oil, not racing oil.

I started using it in my MGB about 5 years ago.

here is the link. =

thanks, max. I will look into using this. I will stop by a flaps to =

Mobil1 15w50 also has the recommended zinc level for older engines. Just =
that one weight is specifically designed for flat tappet engines (you =
can look it up on their applications sheet). And it is intended as a =
street oil, not racing oil.=20

I started using it in my MGB about 5 years ago.

The real question is will your MG keep synthetic inside. My experience is
that synthetic leaks more than dino juice, somewhat due to lower viscosity.
Don't worry about the ZDDP if your engine is anywhere near stock, the
current spec is very close to what early '60s and older oils had in them.
For engines designed in the late '60 (designed - not built) there could be
an issue with the current spec, but even that is questionable. For a '57
MGA, the engine is, shall we say, somewhat agricultural.

Agricultural(?), you are kind Steve.
Actually, my MGA consumes a quart of Red Line in about 1200 miles, and a qu=
art of anything else (well, have only used a couple other brands/formulatio=
ns) in 400 =E2=80=93 600 miles. Almost makes it worth the price.

There=E2=80=99s no blue smoke, and it leaks just like any other stock MGA, =
so I have to assume leakage, although I wouldn=E2=80=99t rule out a small a=

I cannot fathom the reason it consumes less with Red Line, but it does, thr=

The real question is will your MG keep synthetic inside. My experience is
that synthetic leaks more than dino juice, somewhat due to lower viscosity.
Don't worry about the ZDDP if your engine is anywhere near stock, the
current spec is very close to what early '60s and older oils had in them.
For engines designed in the late '60 (designed - not built) there could be
an issue with the current spec, but even that is questionable. For a '57
MGA, the engine is, shall we say, somewhat agricultural.

Subject: [Mgs] Another loss to the MG community
From: "W. David Houser via Mgs" <mgs@autox.team.net>

Errors-To: mgs-bounces@autox.team.net

Fellow Listers,
Our MG community has lost another stalwart.
I received a phone call last night from the Vice-President of the Eastern New York MGA Club, Ray Schwarz, that Jon Rubel, its long-time President and Newsletter Editor had passed.
Jon was instrumental in providing members with so many MG activities over the years.
>From the annual Fallfest British Car show, the Winterfest Luncheon, the famous Dr. Anthony J. Pfizer Memorial Spring Dust-off, the North American Cecil Kimber Run, the Gymkhana-Lobsterfests and so much more. His newsletters contained his personal love affair of things MG.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and his MG family of friends.
He will be missed.
Dave Houser
Florida member
