I installed one on my 72B but I would have to do a partial disassembly to
determine the hole, although I used a pre-existing one. I would estimate it
to be a 3/4" diameter (as a guess) but you should be able to confirm the
size with the antenna as the hole needs to be small enough so the antenna
base covers it but large enough for the inner parts to fit in the hole so it
is not an exact size needed, should be within a minimum and maximum size
range that you need to fall within.

Folks,
I am trying to install a Moss retractable antenna in my 74.5 BGT. I need to
know how big a hole I should drill in the left (driver side) fender.

Dunno about the size but I think you ought to put it on the passenger side.

Rule #1: If it is an aftermarket part, do not count on it being standard.

Rule #2: When you have a question about the aftermarket part, ask the vendor.

Rule #3: If the vendor will not answer your tech question, or the
part comes without installation instructions, send it back for a
refund (as it is unusable).

Rule #4: If you have a question about MGA check the web site:
http://MGAguru.com

Now if you were installing a vintage original Radiomobile antenna,
you may find the installation instructions here:
http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/accessories/at112b.htm
(and the hole for the antenna is 7/8-inch dimeter).

It was really hard; much harder than I thought it would be. Despite
the oil leak that I never could fix, I like to think that the car left
my hands in much better condition than when I got it.

Even with all the warts that come with the later examples of the MGB,
it is a really special car to own. The MX-5 is fun to drive, goes
faster, is more reliable, and is more refined (air con! cruise
control! a cup holder!). But it's not quite the same.

Will I miss the major repairs I've had to do over the years to keep
the 'B in proper driving condition? Frankly, no. But I'll miss the
intimate connection with the car that those tasks created.

Last time I sold my only MGB was over thirty years ago - that lasted about
two years before I had to buy another one. At that time, I had a 52 mile
commute to work (each way) , my replacement car was a gas guzzling Toyota
Land Cruiser, and the drive needed to be fun. Now I have three MGs which I
drive regularly. I hope the MGB you sold was locally so I am not the only
one in the Washington State University area driving around and keeping MGB
visibility.

I did, in a similar manner, part with my big British car, two months ago. I
sold my 2001 Land Rover Discovery, trading it in on a Chevy Silverado pickup
truck. Less expensive repairs, better carrying and towing capacity, and much
better cup holders.

Good. I have very little patience with various transplant schemes. I =
*like* the MG engine =E2=80=94 it revs smoothly, it sounds great, it =
pulls from low RPM in any gear, it=E2=80=99s tough as nails =E2=80=94 =
what=E2=80=99s not to like? It is not in any sense =E2=80=9Ctractor-like=E2=
=80=9D =E2=80=94 I utterly reject that canard. I suppose the poor souls =
suffering with the single-carb low compression smog engines might have a =
different response.

The MG gearbox is also a treat, even allowing for the occasional balky =
synchro. With OD, who needs a 5 speed?

It=E2=80=99s not like a 1500cc MX-5 engine is going to make it all that =
much faster. And you lose the soul.

Not to mention, you have now added electronics and fuel injection to the =
list of potential problems. And those can=E2=80=99t be fixed by the =
rough-and-ready methods previously employed.

Then there=E2=80=99s loading up your tool bag with metric wrenches=E2=80=A6=

Bah, humbug, I say. If you want a Miata, buy a Miata=E2=80=A6 as I =
observe some of us have done...

Better to sell a beloved MG than to total it,
which is what I did many years ago. The dreams
about that didn't stop until I got another MG
and began restoring it almost 15 years later.

Subject: [Mgs] TD Gas cap disassembly
From: Mike Duvall via Mgs <mgs@autox.team.net>
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: mgs-bounces@autox.team.net

The spring snapped on my TD gas tank lid. I bought a new one from Abingdon Spares but upon closer inspection, how do I get this apart without destroying it. It looks to me like I can drill out the small center like it is a rivet (without destroying the outside of the rivet)

Any advice?

Mike

Subject: [Mgs] Antenna hole size on MGB
From: Steve via Mgs <mgs@autox.team.net>
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: mgs-bounces@autox.team.net

I also have to wonder why you want to put the antenna on driver's side. I too would put it on the passenger's side. Unless you are talking about the rear. Still? As for size of hole, measure the metal part that goes through the fender or scuttle into the car, (it's usually some sort of threaded cast metal). You must use the actual antenna you are going to install. The part that is to go through the fender may not be circular, but you can extrapolate the circle from the size. The antenna may also have instructions. Hmm. As a rough estimate you can use the chrome bezel of the antenna as a guess. You don't want to make the hole larger than that. In fact, you want to make the hole as small as possible. You may be able to install the workings of the antenna from the inside of the car. Make a template of the hole you want to make. Again, don't make it bigger than the chrome bezel of the antenna. Make sure that there isn't something important under the location where you are going to drill the hole, and that you will have enough room in the footwell, fender, etc. for the antenna motor and shaft and will be able to snake the wire through to the radio. Find your location, tape your template on so both sides of the cut are protected. I suggest using a pinpoint metal punch to dimple the center of the hole to be cut, then employ a new circular metal cutting blade with small center pilot hole. Insert the bit into VSR drill, have a beer, grit your teeth, and go for it.
Any problems, have another beer and ask a neighbor for HELP!

I have a lot of used parts. Wire wheel rear end, turn signal piths, carbs and more. Are you looking for a part? Trade or sell. Email me.

you can extrapolate the circle from the size. The antenna
may also have instructions. Hmm. As a rough estimate you
can use the chrome bezel of the antenna as a guess. You
don't want to make the hole larger than that. In fact, you
want to make the hole as small as possible. You may be
able to install the workings of the antenna from the
inside of the car. Make a template of the hole you want to
make. Again, don't make it bigger than the chrome bezel of
the antenna. Make sure that there isn't something
important under the location where you are going to drill<br>
the hole, and that you will have enough room in the
footwell, fender, etc. for the antenna motor and shaft and
will be able to snake the wire through to the radio. Find
your location, tape your template on so both sides of the
cut are protected. I suggest using a pinpoint metal punch
to dimple the center of the hole to be cut, then employ a
new circular metal cutting blade with small center pilot
hole. Insert the bit into VSR drill, have a beer, grit
your teeth, and go for it.<br>
Any problems, have another beer and ask a neighbor for
              HELP!<br>

He is referring to what is in the USA the AM Broadcast band.

Bert is evidently an European ham operator.

I put an early B timing chain cover on my A with new thrower .

Oil now gushes in three streams out of the front of the engine. =

Misaligned cover, seal in backwards or throwing in backwards?? pretty sure=

Suggestions? Am I missing anything, better ways to line up the cover?? =

Not enough info. Is the oil coming from the seal or the gasket area?

I'm a ham too. Looks like he has two call signs. Never heard that
"medium wave" term before. Didn't think he meant the broadcast band
because he said "if you can find one." I've looked it up since. Seems
like MW contains the broadcast bands.

upon closer inspection, it seems to be coming from behind the front plate. =

Subject: Re: [Mgs] (OT) Medium Wave
From: Bert Palte via Mgs <mgs@autox.team.net>
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Errors-To: mgs-bounces@autox.team.net

'Medium wave', in virtually every European language, refers to the AM
broadcast band,
roughly 520 - 1605 kHz.

With 'If you can find one' I meant that this band is virtually dead
(over here) and I incorrectly assumed that this is a well known fact.
Several, once important, broadcast stations, like the BBC World Service,
have disappeared there now.
There is not much to hear there any more.
Most radio transmissions now take place in the FM broadcast band,
roughly 87 - 108 MHz.

Yes, I am a ham radio operator. I used to live in Holland, but have
recently moved to Sweden,
hence my two call signs, one for each state.

Sorry for not having been clear enough.

Bert
70 MGB

Hi Bert,

Thanks for the info. There are still AM broadcast stations going in the
US & Mexico. You should hear the "clear channel" stations at night!
But, as you say, the FM stations are much more abundant. I'm a ham in
the USA, I'll have to look for a beacon in or near Sweden. What hours
are you on the air?

Charley - af5ao

There isn't really oil under pressure in the timing chain area. The
tensioner gets oil under pressure which is then directed onto the chain. Oil
gets thrown around by the moving chain.

Did you do anything else in addition to the replacing the timing chain
cover? There is an oil galley plug partially hidden behind the engine front
plate. Did you remove that galley plug and forget to replace it?

See plug #9: http://www.mgaguru.com/mgtech/engine/of101a.htm
