Have you proved the overflow/vent pipes are=20 blocked?

With the float valve upside down it will never = shut off=20 the fuel, and that in itself can cause fuel to bubble up through the=20 jet.

Your car is definitely suffering from DPO syndrome, = what ever=20 the 'P' stands for.

The ignition is rock solid, powerful and beautifully times, thanks to a full Pertronix distriburor. A bit of air balancing and air:fuel ratio testing and setting, and the car will be back strong! Okay, yes, this is an MG forum. My MG TD suffers the same malady as the TR3b did: LCOS. 'That's Lazy Current Owner Syndrome'. I just let the car sit unused for months and the fuel grew old, leaving gum in the SUs as the volitiles preferentially evaporated. Like the TR3b, the jets no longer move. They're gummed in place, leaving the 'choke' control inoperative. Once the TR3b is back running and strong, I will move on to the MG. It too has a Pertronix distributor. Timing is so consistant that the XPAG will idle just fine at 500rpm, if set higher for better furure drivability. And that's my update for an otherwise quiet forum. As to the valve: the manual and I think Moss show the rubber down which hits the lever, leaving the brass to close against the valve hole at the top. I thought to myself, that is kind of dumb: why make the rubber tip crush against lever metal and brass against a small hole. Brass against lever and rubber against open hole makes far more sense. With the float valve upside down it will never shut = off the fuel, and that in itself can cause fuel to bubble up through the = jet.

I just let the car sit unused for months and the fuel grew old, leaving gum in the SUs as the volitiles preferentially evaporated. Like the TR3b, the jets no longer move. They're gummed in place, leaving the 'choke' control inoperative. Once the TR3b is back running and strong, I will move on to the MG. It too has a Pertronix distributor. Timing is so consistant that the XPAG will idle just fine at 500rpm, if set higher for better furure drivability. And that's my update for an otherwise quiet forum. I just rebuilt the SUs on my TR3b and plan to tune the engin= e today. The ignition is rock solid, powerful and beautifully times, thanks= to a full Pertronix distriburor. A bit of air balancing and air:fuel ratio= testing and setting, and the car will be back strong!

Which SUs or Stromberg? If you have the charcoal canister then it's possible for that to get = choked, and there is plenty of pipe-work to get blocked and cause = problems as well. If you are talking about the float valve there should be a sprung metal = pin at the bottom that the float lever bears on. The tip was originally = brass and conical going into a circular chamfered seat, later changed to = Viton which is typically black or red, but still conical, see here = http://www.mgb-stuff.org.uk/fvalve.htm#1 My manuals don't show what you = describe, but Moss Europe for the HIF does seem to show the moving part = of the valve upside down relative to the float, but the HS is the right = way up. If you have the charcoal canister then it's possible for that to = get=20 choked, and there is plenty of pipe-work to get blocked and cause = problems as=20 well.

If you are talking about the float valve there = should be a=20 sprung metal pin at the bottom that the float lever bears on. The = tip was=20 originally brass and conical going into a circular chamfered seat, later = changed=20 to Viton which is typically black or red, but still conical, see here http://www.mgb-stuff.or= g.uk/fvalve.htm#1 =20 My manuals don't show what you describe, but Moss Europe for the HIF = does seem=20 to show the moving part of the valve upside down relative to the float, = but the=20 HS is the right way up. It's not possible to tell from the US = Moss=20 site which way up they are in either HS or HIF. That's=20 not to say that someone hasn't installed a really rubbish = copy.

Same as Max, just replace the ones that need to = be. I've=20 had to replace single spokes a number of times, always the long = ones. You=20 do need to unscrew the nipple on an adjacent spoke to be able to = swing=20 it out of the way to get those back in, and sometimes one on the = other side=20 as well, it depends on the overall length of the new spoke and how far = the=20 thickened shank extends. You are right ? a complete set of spokes far exceeds the cost = of a new chrome wheel. But it?s not difficult to replace individual = spokes. I have done it many times over the years. And that is definitely = cheaper than buying a new wheel very time you break a spoke or two. No = reason to replace them all ? just ones that are broken or noticeably = rusted.

I've had to replace single spokes a number of times, always the long ones. You do need to unscrew the nipple on an adjacent spoke to be able to swing it out of the way to get those back in, and sometimes one on the other side as well, it depends on the overall length of the new spoke and how far the thickened shank extends. So how much work it is going to be depends on whether those adjacent spokes have seized nipples. I've go= t two chromed wire wheels, which did not pass the MOT test.

There ar= e several lose spokes.

All nipples are solid, so is it worth while t= o replace all spokes (buy a
replacement set)?

I'm not afraid to d= o the replacement work myself, as I have experience with
many mopeds and= bikes.

The wheels still are pretty nice.

Looking to = a spare set of spokes (40 and 20) it seems a complete set becomes
far to= o expensive.

Am I right?

You are right ? a complete set of spokes = far exceeds the cost of a new chrome wheel. But it?s not difficult to repla= ce individual spokes. I have done it many times over the years. And that is= definitely cheaper than buying a new wheel very time you break a spoke or = two. No reason to replace them all ? just ones that are broken or noticeabl= y rusted.

= Same as Max, just replace the ones that need to be. I've had to repla= ce single spokes a number of times, always the long ones. You do need= to unscrew the nipple on an adjacent spoke to be able to swing it out of t= he way to get those back in, and sometimes one on the other side as well, i= t depends on the overall length of the new spoke and how far the thickened = shank extends. Do they check every spo= ke when they do the MOT? I can't imagine anyone in the US checking for some= thing like that during our 'inspections'. Here in NJ, they don't evendo saf= ety inspections any longer, just emissions testing.

I've never known them check the spokes= in the UK, although the test does call for it in 1b: http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_420.htm

An ex-MOTer pal says it is a visual only (like on BMW spoked alloy= s) although a very keen tester may ping them - all 240/320 of them. I= n my experience when they break the break is inside the hub, so only detect= able if you do ping or wiggle them.

Yes, the ping test is pretty tedious?

I find they e= ither break just below the head (inside the hub, as you said) or on the thr= eaded end just outside the nipple (where they often rust), and this is usua= lly only when you are trying to adjust them.
